Building stronger Arctic communities

Research in labs funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation is opening new pathways for investment, sustainability and connectivity in the North.

The Arctic is changing fast, and research will help Canada meet its ambitions in this vast and complex region. Insights from the fields of engineering, defence, environmental and social sciences will build critical infrastructure that is dual use, climate resilient, and aligned with community priorities.

Across the North, communities and industry are working with researchers to help the region shape mining and energy projects, chart sustainable shipping routes and protect our borders.

Aboard the Amundsen icebreaker: where science meets sovereignty

A key presence in the Arctic Ocean, the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Amundsen is adapted to meet the evolving needs of Arctic research. With more than 80 scientific systems on board, this floating lab supports Northern communities and advances scientific diplomacy by welcoming international researchers working on shared challenges in health, climate and development in the Arctic.
