De nouveaux outils pour les chercheurs canadiens de renom

WINNIPEG (MANITOBA) – Imaginez un médicament anticancéreux nanométrique capable de détruire une tumeur au sein sans endommager les tissus avoisinants. Ou un greffon autocicatrisant, composé de nanomatériaux, pour traiter les plaies des personnes atteintes de diabète. Ces deux technologies biomédicales pourraient à elles seules améliorer grandement la qualité de vie de patients et permettre aux Canadiens d’économiser des millions de dollars en couts de santé.

Voilà pourquoi le gouvernement du Canada, par l’entremise de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), investit dans l’infrastructure de recherche du nouveau Biomaterials and Nanomedicine Laboratory de l’Université du Manitoba.

Le financement annoncé aujourd’hui à l’université par l’honorable Kirsty Duncan, ministre des Sciences, fait partie d’un investissement de plus de 554 millions de dollars dans 117 projets d’infrastructure de 61 universités, collèges et hôpitaux de recherche au Canada. Cette annonce marque un important jalon pour la FCI : le financement de plus de 10 000 projets financés depuis sa création en 1997.

Nouveau chef de file du génie biomédical et de la nanomédecine à l’Université du Manitoba, Malcolm Xing se servira de cet équipement de pointe pour développer des nanoparticules à charge médicamenteuse qui ciblent les cellules tumorales. Son équipe et lui développeront des nanocomposites imprimés en trois dimensions et servant aux greffons cutanés pour le traitement des ulcères du pied diabétique. Ce projet est l’un des quatre pour lesquels l’université recevra un financement de la FCI totalisant 1,2 million de dollars.

 Le financement annoncé aujourd’hui, octroyé par le Fonds d’innovation de la FCI, appuiera des recherches, allant du captage de l’énergie marémotrice renouvelable à la réhabilitation des traumatisés crâniens en passant par la construction du premier ordinateur quantique au monde.  

Cet investissement vise à procurer aux chercheurs canadiens les outils dont ils ont besoin pour découvrir, innover et former les étudiants qui seront en poste demain. Ces chercheurs contribuent ainsi à bâtir un avenir plus dynamique et plus radieux pour tous les Canadiens et à garantir une classe moyenne prospère et en santé.
