Coast guard ship finds new career as floating lab
December 1, 2002

Refitting ships is something new for the CFI, and now a group of Quebec Universities has a proud new flagship.

The Coriolis II, a retired coast guard vessel, is today a floating laboratory, bristling with the latest in high-tech oceanographic equipment. The Rimouski-based vessel recently completed its maiden cruise, where faculty and students set out to explore the gulf of St. Lawrence River.

Serge Demers, Director of the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski says, the new scientific trawler allows for detailed examination of riverbed sediments. The studies will provide invaluable clues to determining the health of fish stocks and provide insight into the overall health of river and ocean ecologies.

See the May-June 2002 issue of Innovation Canada for a story on the search for the ship.
