Un investissement de 28 M$ pour recruter et maintenir 193 chercheurs en poste au Canada
OTTAWA, le 15 novembre 2007 — Le Canada a fait des pas de géant dans ses efforts pour recruter et maintenir en poste les travailleurs du savoir qui innovent et qui contribuent à la croissance de l’économie mondiale fondée sur le savoir. Aujourd’hui, nous faisons un autre pas en avant : 193 chercheurs, dont 50 ont été recrutés à l’étranger, pourront mener des travaux de recherche de pointe grâce à un investissement de 28 millions de dollars annoncé par la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI).

Cet investissement dans les laboratoires et l’appareillage de pointe de 35 universités et collèges de recherche du Canada permettra de lancer 139 projets dans des domaines clés comme les sciences environnementales, la santé, les technologies de l’information et des communications de même que les sciences humaines.

Ce matin, à Ottawa, l’honorable Jim Prentice, ministre de l’Industrie et ministre responsable de la FCI, s’est joint au Dr Eliot Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI, à l’occasion de l’annonce de cet important investissement au titre du Fonds des leaders (FL) de la FCI. Ce programme vise à se doter d’infrastructures susceptibles de motiver les chercheurs à venir travailler au sein des établissements de recherche canadiens à une époque où la concurrence internationale ayant trait au recrutement des travailleurs du savoir est très vive.

« En ce début de XXIe siècle, il est essentiel que nos chercheurs aient accès à un appareillage et à des installations modernes et avant-gardistes, à déclaré le Dr Phillipson. Au cours de la dernière décennie, la FCI a fourni à des milliers de chercheurs de calibre mondial les outils dont ils avaient besoin pour mener à bien leurs travaux. Sans cette infrastructure, ils auraient sans aucun doute quitté le Canada. »

« Comme il en a fait état dans sa stratégie Réaliser le potentiel des sciences et de la technologie au profit du Canada, notre gouvernement est résolu à créer un plus vaste bassin d’experts scientifiques et à mettre en place les conditions propices qui permettront d’améliorer la réputation mondiale du Canada en matière d’excellence en recherche, a déclaré le ministre Prentice. Nous reconnaissons l’importance d’en faire davantage pour commercialiser les innovations scientifiques et technologiques. Cela contribuera ainsi à la création de meilleurs emplois, à la croissance économique, et à l’amélioration de notre qualité de vie. »

Par suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation au mérite, le conseil d’administration de la FCI a approuvé l’investissement de 27 904 254 $ annoncé aujourd’hui. Ce montant se répartit comme suit :

  • 23 344 067 $ ont été attribués au titre du Fonds des leaders;
  • 4 560 187 $ ont été attribués au titre du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme connexe qui aide les établissements bénéficiaires à faire face aux coûts additionnels d’exploitation et de maintenance découlant de leurs nouvelles infrastructures.
