Canada Foundation for Innovation #IAmInnovation Twitter contest summary

Submission period

Contestants can submit entries to the contest Sponsor, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), via their personal Twitter accounts as of October 2, 2017, at 12:00 a.m. (eastern), until the contest closes on December 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. (eastern).

Eligibility

At the time of entry, Contestants must be either a full-time or part-time student (undergrad or graduate) or full-time or part-time post-doctoral fellow at a post-secondary institution in Canada that has previously received CFI funding, is nineteen (19) years of age or older, and in compliance with these contest rules and regulations. Proof of enrollment may be required after submission and before awarding the winners. However, a request for proof of enrollment is not an indication of winning; it may be used to confirm a Contestant’s eligibility to take part in the contest.

Submission requirements

The Submission must be an original work—a video or image submitted to the Sponsor through the Contestant’s personal Twitter account featuring the Contestant’s research project or initiative supported by CFI-funded infrastructure or conducted in a CFI-funded facility at the institution at which the Contestant is enrolled at the time of submission. The video or image must be accompanied by a caption. (See “Judging criteria.”) The Submission must comply with Twitter’s official Contest rules and Terms of service.

The Contestant’s Submission must include the hashtag #IAmInnovation and #Contest. Failure to include both hashtags will disqualify the Submission. For the Submission to be valid, the Contestant must also follow the CFI’s Twitter account, @InnovationCA, if not already done so.

Prizes

  1. Three Winners will each have the opportunity to take over the CFI’s Twitter account for up to four hours between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (eastern) at an agreed-upon time after the Winners are made public on January 8, 2018, and prior to the end of February 2018 to share their research with the CFI’s 10,000+ followers, which include some of Canada’s leading researchers, innovative companies, incubators, science media and government officials.

Winners will receive takeover guidelines from the Sponsor in advance and must agree to follow them before scheduling a takeover. The Sponsor reserves the right to delete any inappropriate tweets made during the takeover and to cancel the takeover at any time for any reason.

  1. Winners will receive an all-expenses paid round-trip from within Canada to Ottawa, and one-night accommodation. Travel will occur by the end of March 2018. The maximum prize value is $2,500, including travel to and from their place of residence within Canada, one-night hotel accommodation—unless the Winner resides in the Ottawa-Gatineau region—and a per diem allowance for meals and travel incidentals as per the Sponsor’s travel expense policy. Winners are expected to attend an invitation-only event in Ottawa with the Sponsor and meet with distinguished guests, who could include government officials, researchers and other students and post-docs profiled in the Sponsor’s promotional student campaign.

The all-expenses paid round-trip is for each of the Winners only and not for additional guests. It is non-transferable nor redeemable for cash. The mode of transportation for the trip will vary depending on the Winner’s place of residence. Winners will be responsible for their own travel insurance.

The Sponsor will be responsible for booking all travel and accommodation.
The Winners reserve the right to use private accommodations instead of paid hotel accommodations while in Ottawa as per the Sponsor’s travel policy.

If any of the Winners refuse or are unable to, for whatever reason, participate in the Twitter takeover and/or attend the event in Ottawa, the Sponsor reserves the right to revoke their prizes and award a runner up.

The chances of winning a prize depend on the total number and quality of eligible Submissions received before the closing date of December 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. (eastern).

Eligibility

  1. The Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (the “Sponsor”) “#IAmInnovation” contest (the “Contest”) is open to residents of Canada who at the time of entry: (i) are students (undergraduate or graduate) enrolled full-time or part-time at a Canadian postsecondary institution that has previously received CFI funding or (ii) are full-time or part-time post-doc researchers at a Canadian postsecondary institution that has previously received CFI funding and (iii) are nineteen (19) years of age or older and (iv) conduct research using CFI-funded infrastructure or work in a CFI-funded facility (the “Contestants” or “Contestant”).
  2. Employees of the Sponsor, including immediate family members and/or those living in the same household (whether legally related or not) are not eligible. For purposes of the Contest, immediate family members are defined as spouse, domestic partner, parents, legal guardians, in-laws, grandparents, siblings, children and grandchildren.

Contest period and entry

To be eligible for the Contest, Contestants must tweet their Submission to the Sponsor from their personal Twitter account, including the campaign hashtag #IAmInnovation and #Contest, and follow the CFI’s Twitter account (if they do not already do so) between October 2, 2017, at 12:00 a.m. (eastern) and December 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. (eastern). It is the sole responsibility of each Contestant to ensure all required materials are tweeted by the Closing Date.

Eligible Submissions

To participate in the Contest, a Contestant must submit one video or image via their personal Twitter account to the Sponsor, accompanied by a caption of no more than 140 characters, featuring their research project or initiative supported by CFI-funded infrastructure or conducted in a CFI-funded facility at the institution at which the Contestant is enrolled in full-time or part-time at the time of submission.

The Submission must comply with the Sponsor’s Judging criteria.

A Submission must be respectful and courteous, and be in English or French
or both.

A Submission can be edited for creativity and clarity but not in such a way that would grossly misrepresent the Submission. Acceptable editing includes cropping, flipping, rotating, tilting and zooming images and videos; shortening videos, adding music to videos and adding animation and text over images
and videos.

Unacceptable editing includes changing an image or video’s colour, distorting the size of objects that appear in the images and videos, and any other edits that distort the meaning of the Submission.

One entry per Contestant is permitted.

The Submission must be an entirely original work created by the Contestant and the Contestant must have all necessary rights to the Submission.

The Submission must not infringe upon or violate any laws or any third party rights, including, but not limited to, copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary rights and must not constitute material that would be considered libelling, defamatory, a privacy violation, tortious or a contract breach.

The Contestant must obtain, and make available to the Sponsor upon the Sponsor’s request, all necessary permissions, licenses, clearances, releases, waivers of moral rights and other approvals from third parties (including but not limited to all copyright holders and all individuals appearing in the Submission) necessary to use the Submission, in whole or in part, in any way, including without limitation, to reproduce, make derivatives, edit, modify, translate, distribute, transmit, publish, license and broadcast the Submission worldwide,
by any means.

In the event the Submission contains any reference to or likeness of any identifiable third parties, the Contestant must obtain, and make available to Sponsor upon Sponsor’s request, consent from all such individuals and their parent/guardian if they are under the age of majority in their jurisdiction
of residence.

Contestants must grant the Sponsor, irrevocably and in perpetuity, the right to use the Submission, in whole or in part, in any way, including without limitation,
to reproduce, make derivatives, edit, modify, translate, distribute, transmit, publish and broadcast the Submission worldwide (by any means) and to authorize others to carry out such acts as listed above in this section without compensation.

Contestants, to protect their own privacy and the privacy of others, must not include personal information including, but not limited to, phone numbers, social insurance numbers, banking information, resumes or email addresses in their Submissions. Any Submissions that appear to contain such personal information may be deemed ineligible.

The Sponsor will not accept Submissions that are offensive to an individual or an organization, rude in tone or abusive. The Sponsor reserves the right to refuse, edit or remove any of the following:

  • racist, hateful, sexist, homophobic, slanderous, insulting, or life-
  • threatening content;
  • serious, unproven, unsupported, or inaccurate accusations against individuals or organizations;
  • abusive, aggressive, coarse, explicit, vulgar, violent, obscene or
  • pornographic content;
  • content that encourages or suggests illegal activity;
  • announcements, solicitations, advertisements, or endorsements of any organizations or corporations;
  • attempts to defame or defraud any individual, group or agency; or
  • unintelligible or irrelevant content.

Prizes

  1. Three Winners will each have the opportunity to take over the CFI’s Twitter account for four hours on one business day between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (eastern) at an agreed-upon time after the Winners are made public on January 8, 2018 and prior to the end of February 2018 to share their research with the CFI’s 10,000+ followers, including Canada’s leading researchers, innovative companies, incubators, science media and government officials.

Before the takeovers take place, the chosen Winners will receive takeover guidelines from the Sponsor, including minimum number of tweets to be sent out, minimum number of hours of Twitter activity required, and they must agree to follow these guidelines before a takeover is scheduled. The Sponsor reserves the right to delete any inappropriate tweets made during the takeover and to cancel the takeover at any time for any reason.

  1. The Winners will win an all-expenses paid round-trip from within Canada to Ottawa and one-night accommodation by the end of March 2018, to a maximum value of $2,500 (includes travel to and from their place of residence within Canada, one-night hotel accommodation—unless the Winner resides in the Ottawa-Gatineau region—and a per diem allowance for meals and travel incidentals as per the Sponsor’s travel expense policy) to join the Sponsor at an invitation-only event in Ottawa, and meet with distinguished guests, who could include government officials and students and post-docs profiled in the Sponsor’s promotional student campaign.

The all-expenses paid round-trip is for each of the Winners only and not for secondary guests. It is non-transferable to another person nor redeemable for cash. The mode of transportation for the trip will vary and depend upon the place of residence of each Winner. Winners will be responsible for their own
travel insurance.

The Sponsor will be responsible for booking all travel and accommodation.
The Winners reserve the right to use private accommodations instead of paid hotel accommodations while in Ottawa.

If any of the Winners refuse to do the Twitter takeover and/or are unable,
for whatever reason, or refuse to attend the event in Ottawa, the Sponsor reserves the right to revoke their prizes and award a runner up.

The chances of winning a prize are dependent on the total number of eligible Submissions received before the closing date of December 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. (eastern).

Judging the Submissions

Submissions will be judged by a panel chosen by the Sponsor and made up of the Sponsor’s employees and one external judge from one of the Sponsor’s stakeholder groups. All judges will be based in Ottawa, Ontario. The Sponsor employee judges will represent each of the Sponsor’s departments to ensure fair representation. The decisions of the judges and the Sponsor on all matters relating to the contest are final and not open to appeal.

At time of adjudication, any judges deemed by the Sponsor to have a real or perceived conflict of interest with a Submission under consideration will be recused from discussions of that Submission. A judge will be considered to be in a conflict of interest if the Submission involves: 

  • a friend;
  • an immediate family member (as defined above); or
  • a person with whom the judge is involved in a dispute.

If the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, deems that an insufficient quantity of Submissions has been received, the Sponsors reserve the right to choose fewer than three Winners or not award any prizes and terminate the Contest.

In the event of a tiebreaker, an additional panel of new judges will be convened to make the final decision on the winning Submissions.

Judging criteria

  • A strong Submission must clearly demonstrate how the Contestant has benefitted from working on CFI-funded equipment or in a CFI-funded facility.
  • The CFI-funded equipment or CFI-funded facility must appear in the Submission.
  • The Submission must clearly demonstrate how the CFI has been an engine of opportunity for the Contestant.
  • The benefit to the Contestant can be any number of things, including but not limited to advancing one’s research, a research discovery or breakthrough, a career opportunity, a personal realization, a chance to collaborate with industry, etc.
  • The Submission must clearly explain the Contestant’s research and why it is important to the Contestant, and the potential benefits of the research
    to Canadians.
  • A strong Submission is engaging and demonstrates the Contestant’s enthusiasm and excitement for their work.
  • Video tweets cannot be longer than 140 seconds.
  • Video tweets cannot be accompanied by a caption of more than
    140 characters.
  • Image tweets cannot have more than 140 characters.
  • Image tweets cannot be made up of more than one image.

Submissions that meet all eligibility requirements will be judged as follows: 

  • 30% Creativity/Engagement
    1. compelling content/story/production
    2. interesting descriptions and presentation of the Contestant’s research that is clear and concise
    3. obvious highlighting of relevant CFI-funded equipment or facility
  • 30% Persuasiveness
    1. message, whether visual or text based, clearly communicates the impact of the Contestant’s research
    2. clear understanding of how the Contestant has benefitted from working on CFI-funded equipment or working in a
      CFI-funded facility
  • 40% Clarity
    1. use of plain, accessible language for a lay audience
    2. crisp (not distorted) image or video
    3. clear explanation of the research and how the CFI has played a role in the results

Winners

Winners will be privately informed the week of December 18, 2017, via a direct Twitter message, and will be made public by January 8, 2018. Once winners are contacted, they will be informed of the procedure to follow to claim the applicable prize. If a winning Contestant declines the prize, it may be awarded to another Submission in accordance with these Contest rules and regulations.

General

Only Winners will be notified of a win.

Before collecting a prize, and within five (5) calendar days of being notified that his/her Submission has been selected, any Winner will be required to provide consent and release confirming, among other things, compliance with these Contest rules and regulations; acceptance of the prizes awarded, and consent that their personal information, such as name, likeness, institution of enrolment and/or prize information, may be used, without further compensation, in any publication or promotional material, by the Sponsor, for the sole purposes of promoting the Contest, its Winners and/or the benefits of their research.

All prizes must be accepted as awarded, without substitution; are not transferrable or convertible to cash; and are not for resale.

Names of Winners will be made public January 8, 2018 via social media channels (i.e.: Twitter and Facebook) and other means, including the Sponsor’s website, Innovation.ca. 

The Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest for any reason. Any notification of such action may be posted online on the CFI’s website and/or via social media channels, and Contestants are encouraged to periodically check for such notifications.

The Sponsor reserves the right to change Contest rules and regulations without reason, including, if necessary, to comply with any applicable law. Any notification of such action may be posted online on the CFI’s website and/or via social media channels, and Contestants are encouraged to periodically check for
such notifications.

By entering this Contest, Contestants agree to abide by these Contest rules and regulations, and acknowledge that the Sponsor shall not be responsible for any damages, costs, demands, claims or losses of any kind incurred by any Contestant as a result of participation in this Contest.

This Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Ontario and any applicable federal laws. These rules and regulations govern all aspects of the Contest and are binding on all Contestants.

The Sponsor is not responsible for entries that are delayed, misdirected or incomplete. Any entry that is unreadable or unintelligible will be ineligible.

The Sponsor is not responsible for telephone, computer or network malfunction or error (whether technical or human in nature), communication disruption or other forces beyond the reasonable control of the Sponsor.

Personal information

Any personal information collected in order to administer the Contest is under the control of the Sponsor and will be managed in accordance with the Privacy Act. Information collected for the purposes of administering the Contest may be subject to disclosure in accordance with the Access to Information Act. Personal information of Winners, such as name, likeness, institution of enrolment and/or prize information may be used, without compensation, in any publication or promotional material by the Sponsor for the sole purposes of promoting the Contest, administering the Contest and awarding the prizes, its Winners and/or the benefits of their research.
