$118 million funds more than 100 Canada Research Chairs and their research infrastructure needs

October 16, 2014

OTTAWA, October 16, 2014 — Ed Holder, the federal Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced 137 new and returning Canada Research Chair (CRC) recipients today at a ceremony at the University of Toronto. This funding will allow researchers from across the country and across disciplines to advance their work using state-of-the-art research tools.

Of the $118 million investment by the Government of Canada to support this latest round of CRC appointments, $7.86 million was funded through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

The researchers being funded today range from one who will crunch big data to discover how planets are truly formed to another who aims to develop new ways to help returning soldiers reintegrate into domestic military and civilian communities. Other recipients announced today include:

Goldie Nejat, University of Toronto
Goldie Nejat will use her new research infrastructure to expand her work in designing intelligent robots capable of interacting with people and sensing the environment around them. She has been prototyping a robot named “Brian” who was engineered to assist the elderly with memory tasks that may help prevent cognitive decline.

Rachel Chang, Dalhousie University
As a newly appointed professor at Dalhousie and a new CRC, atmospheric scientist Rachel Chang will build tools to gauge the precise chemical mix of air particles and humidity that leads to the dense fogs that can plague Maritime coastlines.

Robert Hancock, University of British Columbia
Renewed CRC, Robert Hancock, will build upon his award-winning infectious disease research to improve the efficacy of antibiotics that target the bacteria that thrive on medical devices, such as catheters and stents, and which are significant contributors to hospital-acquired infections.
