Small campus, big idea

New funds for research infrastructure enable academics at smaller universities to launch innovative projects
March 28, 2014

OTTAWA, March 28, 2014 – Today, the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is announcing more than $3 million in new funding for research infrastructure that will support the latest appointments to the Canada Research Chairs program (CRC) who were revealed today. The funds will be used to equip these academics with state-of-the-art infrastructure that will enable them to conduct world-class research. Here is a sample of three new chair holders who will use CFI funds to kick-start big projects that will advance the fields of health, conservation and culture.

Dennis Murray will spend this coming field season tracking and tagging lynx, snowshoe hair and coyotes in the Yukon and Washington state. The Trent University ecologist will use high-tech GPS equipment to monitor the movement and health of these iconic creatures which he says are threatened by the cumulative effects of climate change and habitat loss. The data Murray collects will paint an accurate picture of how these mammals are responding to dramatic changes in the environment which may then be used to inform policies to protect them.

Benoit Doyon-Gosselin will begin combing through archives this summer to research the literary history of Acadia. The University of Moncton historian will be searching for trends among Acadian writers and publishers including how their writing related to other minority francophone cultures across North America. Doyon-Gosselin’s goal is to trace the evolution and influences of Acadian literature through time.

Yvonne Boyer is planning to build the Indigenous Community-Based Health Research Centre at Brandon University in southern Manitoba. Boyer says the centre will become a hub for the region’s indigenous community who will be encouraged to share their stories of pre-contact health practices, such as how their great grandmothers would cure a common cold. Boyer says she expects this qualitative data to be incorporated in the discussion about legal and policy issues surrounding contemporary aboriginal health rights.

The CFI is supporting the Canada Research Chairs Program by providing $3,671,032 in new funding for research infrastructure projects at universities across the country.
