The CFI Invests Over $24 Million at 38 Canadian Universities

November 3, 2003

OTTAWA, November 3, 2003—Today, Dr. David Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), joined by Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, announced an investment of $24.3 million to support 124 infrastructure projects in 38 universities across Canada.

“In the new knowledge-based economy, prosperity depends on the investments that we make in the creativity and talents of our people,” said Industry Minister Allan Rock. “Today’s CFI announcement will give these researchers the tools they need to contribute to building greater prosperity for all Canadians.”

“The CFI is proud to enable these universities to attract world-class faculty members in areas that are essential to their research objectives,” said Dr. Strangway. “By investing in these projects, the CFI is helping to strengthen research and training at institutions across Canada.”

“The promotion of an innovation culture and branding our country as a world-leader in this area is a priority for the Government of Canada,” added Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development). “This CFI investment will help strengthen Canada's economy in many regions and communities.”

The CFI Board of Directors approved a total investment of $24.3 million in infrastructure for 124 projects at 38 universities. They include:

  • University of Alberta – Infrastructure for establishing a communications research laboratory;
  • York University – A space instrument test laboratory;
  • Université de Sherbrooke – Infrastructure de recherche sur la matière molle :; glaces, polymères et cristaux liquides / Research infrastructure for soft matter: ices, polymers and liquid crystals;
  • Dalhousie University – An advanced geo-environmental engineering laboratory for petroleum waste management technologies.

The projects were selected on the recommendation of experts who thoroughly assessed each project against the three CFI criteria:

  • Quality of research and the need for infrastructure;
  • Contribution to strengthening the capacity for innovation;
  • Potential benefits of the research to Canada.

The $24.3 million investment has been awarded through two funds: $18.7 million under the New Opportunities Fund which enables universities to provide infrastructure for newly recruited faculty members; and $5.6 million under the Infrastructure Operating Fund which assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.

A list of the projects approved by the CFI to date, and a list of the approved funding for this announcement, are available here.

The CFI is an independent corporation established by the Government of Canada in 1997 to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and other non-profit research organizations to carry out world-class research and technology development.
