The CFI Celebrates Cutting-Edge Canadian Research

December 5, 2002

Ottawa, December 5th, 2002—David Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and editors James Downey and Lois Claxton are proud to announce the official launch of a new collection of essays showcasing some of the country’s most cutting-edge researchers. This collection of essays is a Canadian first and features the work of 33 pioneers in their field.

Entitled inno'va-tion and inno'v@-tion2 : Essays by Leading Canadian Researchers, the project is presented in two complimentary formats. The first format consists of a website containing eight interactive essays, the first of its kind to ever be published on the CFI website. The second consists of 25 essays in traditional book format published by Key Porter Books. The essays feature stories of researchers who specialize in areas ranging from aquaculture and healthcare, to quantum physics and climate change.

“This collection of essays recognizes those who create and advance innovation in Canada,” said Dr. Strangway. “Our greatest appreciation and admiration should be reserved for our nation’s researchers. They are at the core of our most valuable and essential partnership–without them, there would be no innovation to speak of.”

This project began two years ago with David Strangway’s vision—to tell Canadians about the world-class, cutting-edge research taking place right here in Canada. Today, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the editors and the researchers, who were identified with the assistance of the federal granting councils, the vision has become a reality. The Canada Foundation for Innovation is pleased to present this collection of essays that illustrates and celebrates these unique individuals whose research is helping to transform Canada into one of the most innovative countries in the world.

The CFI is an independent, not-for-profit corporation established by the Government of Canada in 1997 to strengthen the capacity for innovation in Canadian universities and research institutions.
