51 Canadian universities and research institutions receive $226 million to strengthen their innovation capacity

June 23, 1999

Montreal, June 23, 1999... Dr. David W. Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), announced today an investment of $226 million to support 122 infrastructure projects in 51 Canadian universities, colleges, hospitals, and not-for-profit research institutions.

"Today's announcement represents a major infusion of capital that will leverage an additional $339 million in funding from partners in the public, private, and voluntary sectors," said Dr. Strangway. "Canada's research community will greatly benefit from this extraordinary level of partnership as we move into the knowledge-based economy of the new millennium."

Since August 1998, the CFI has invested a total of $426 million in research in Canada. When coupled with contributions from the other funding partners, this will translate into more than $1 billion in capital investment to help strengthen the research environment in Canadian institutions.

The projects announced today were selected by the CFI Board of Directors on the recommendation of multidisciplinary assessment committees comprised of experts from a wide range of fields and disciplines. To receive funding under the following mechanisms, applicants had to demonstrate how their projects will benefit Canada.

  • Under the CFI's Institutional Innovation Fund, 22 institutions will receive a total of $210 million for 45 projects.
  • Under the Research Development Fund, the Board of Directors approved investments totalling $4 million for 23 projects in 9 institutions.
  • Under the New Opportunities Fund, a total of $5 million was approved for 35 projects in 10 universities.
  • The Board of Directors also approved 19 projects in 15 institutions totalling $7 million under the College Research Development Fund.

Under the Institutional Innovation Fund, the CFI will hold two more competitions for funding in 2000 and 2001. The budget allocations for these two competitions have been established at $300 million and $250 million respectively. An updated program description and call for proposals will be issued early in the fall of 1999.

Under the New Opportunities Fund and Research Development Fund, the CFI will maintain its ongoing competitions. The budget allocation over the life of the CFI for these funds has been established at $144 million for the New Opportunities Fund, and $40 million for the Research Development Fund.

list of approved projects is available on the CFI Web site: www.innovation.ca.

The CFI is an independent, not-for-profit corporation established by the federal government in 1997 to address an urgent need of Canada's research community for new, state-of-the-art research infrastructure. The CFI has been entrusted with a capital budget of $1 billion, and its investments are made in partnership with all levels of government, as well as with the private and voluntary sectors. Its work focuses on health, the environment, science, and engineering.
