inno'v@-tion2
Foreword
The Canada Foundation for Innovation is pleased to present inno’v@-tion2, an online collection of essays by eight Canadian researchers at the top of their profession.

Working in the fields of physics, laser technology, virtual learning, molecular evolution, project management, communications and interactive media, and the visual arts, these researchers provide us with unmistakable proof that innovation is thriving in Canada. Their commitment to excellence, and the foresight and imagination that they bring to their work, will have a profound impact on the overall quality of life of countless Canadians—for many years to come. We thank them for generously and eloquently sharing their experiences and insights.

To showcase the work and ideas of these talented researchers, we have chosen a web-based format that is as vibrant and dynamic as the projects they are involved in. In fact, inno’v@-tion2 makes use of the best that the modern electronic medium has to offer and is an essential companion to the CFI’s newly launched book, inno’va-tion, a collection of essays by 25 equally dynamic Canadian researchers. Together, these two products demonstrate the success that is possible when we strengthen the capability of our nation’s researchers to carry out world-class research. They also highlight the value of building partnerships with research institutions all across our country.

Among the many valuable partnerships that have played a role in the success of the CFI’s programs and goals are the ones with the research-funding organizations and the outstanding individuals who lead them: Alan Bernstein, President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; Tom Brzustowski, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council; Marc Renaud, President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council; René Durocher, Executive Director of the Canada Research Chairs; and Martin Godbout, President and CEO of Genome Canada. We thank them—and the organizations they represent—for their commitment to research and innovation in Canada.

We must, however, reserve our greatest appreciation and admiration for our nation’s researchers. They are at the core of our most valuable and essential partnerships—without them there would be no innovation to speak of.
