After
completing his Masters in Fine Arts in printmaking at the University
of Alberta in 1995, Sean Caulfield spent five years working in the
United States, first at Northern Illinois University as a visiting
scholar, and then at Illinois State University as assistant professor.
He then returned to Canada to assume a junior Canada Research Chair
in printmaking at the University of Alberta.
During the past six years, Caulfield has participated in a wide range
of exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. Significant
exhibitions during this period include: International Print Triennial,
Kracow, 2000; Bridge to the Future, Kracow (2000); Re-membered Image,
Gallery of the Canadian Embassy, Tokyo (1999); 2nd International Triennial
of Graphic Art, Prague; Ljubljana Biennial Print Exhibition, Modern
Gallery and Tivoli Gallery, Ljubljana, (1997). Recent exhibitions
include: Global Matrix International Print Exhibition, Purdue University
Gallery, Purdue University (2002); and Canadian Print Now, Shanghai,
China (2002/2003).
During this period, Caulfield received a number of awards and grants
including: The Canada Council Travel Grant; Visual Arts Fellowship,
Illinois Arts Council; Prix Banque Nationale du Canada; Best of Show,
"Works on Paper '99: a National Biennial Juried Exhibition,"
at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois; Second Place in the Second
Annual Great Canadian Printmaking Competition, Toronto; Grand Prize
in the Third 21st Century Grand Prix Exhibition, Tokyo. Caulfield's
work can be found in various public and private collections including:
Loyola University Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; University of Dallas,
Dallas, Texas; Ernst and Young, Toronto; University of Alberta; The
Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa; and the Alberta Art Foundation, Edmonton.
