| Along with innova-tion,
the newly launched book of 25 essays, innov@-tion2
was conceived as a way of showcasing the outstanding work being done by
some of Canadas leading researchers. The project was David Strangways idea. As President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation and former president of two of Canadas finest research universities, Dr. Strangway saw the need to provide the informed but non-specialist reader with a view of the range, depth, and excitement of the scholarly inquiry taking place in our nations laboratories and libraries. By choosing to showcase a selection of these essays in a modern, on-line format, the CFI has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that Canadians have access to stories about the profound impact that innovation has on their lives. When asked if we would commission and edit this collection of essays, we accepted with enthusiasm, and then sought the assistance of several people familiar with the Canadian research scene in identifying a representative sample of the best work being done. Thomas Brzustowski, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council; Arthur Carty, President of the National Research Council; and Marc Renaud, President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council were especially helpful. Almost without exception, those invited to contribute essays agreed to do so. Many people generously contributed their expertise and talent to this project. Two deserve special mention. Patrick Mikhail brought his impressive professional skills to bear on editorial refinements of the text. Suzanne Corbeil of the CFI was wonderfully supportive throughout. James Downey Lois Claxton |
