Le milieu canadien de la recherche reçoit 26 millions de dollars pour financer l’infrastructure de pointe

GUELPH, le 7 avril 2009 — La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) a annoncé aujourd’hui un investissement de 26 millions de dollars pour financer l’infrastructure de 117 projets menés dans 29 établissements de recherche canadiens. Cet investissement permettra à 148 des meilleurs chercheurs du Canada de mener leurs activités de recherche de grâce à des installations et des équipements de calibre mondial.

Avec ces investissements du Fonds des leaders, la FCI continue à financer une infrastructure de recherche de pointe qui aide à stimuler différents secteurs de notre économie associés à de tels projets d’immobilisation. On estime actuellement que chaque dollar investi directement dans la recherche produit des retombées économiques de plus sept dollars, notamment grâce aux emplois créés par des entreprises dérivées.
Le FL permet de réagir aux changements rapides qui touchent le milieu de la recherche en donnant aux universités canadiennes la souplesse dont elles ont besoin pour recruter et maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs au monde, à une époque de vive concurrence internationale en ce qui a trait au recrutement des travailleurs du savoir.
Le Dr Eliot Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI, était accompagné de l’honorable Gary Goodyear, Ministre d’État (Sciences et Technologie) lors de l’annonce à l’Université de Guelph,.
« Cet investissement montre bien l’engagement que le gouvernement du Canada a pris à l’égard de l’excellence des activités de recherche », a déclaré l’honorable Gary Goodyear, ministre d’État (Sciences et Technologie). « Les succès du FL de la FCI aident à rehausser la capacité de recherche du Canada, et les nouvelles sommes investies permettront au Canada de continuer à figurer parmi les pays les plus innovateurs au monde ».
« Comme ils forment l’un des piliers de notre économie axée sur l’innovation, les établissements de recherche du Canada joueront un rôle vital dans la relance de notre économie à court et à long terme. L’investissement annoncé aujourd’hui vient donc appuyer les efforts déployés par les établissements pour s’acquitter de ce rôle très important », a pour sa part déclaré le Dr Phillipson.
En mars, le conseil d’administration de la FCI a donné son aval à un investissement total de 26 712 283 $ par suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation au mérite. Ce montant comprend :
- 20 559 448 $ attribués par le Fonds des leaders;
- 6 152 835 $ alloués par le Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme complémentaire qui aide les établissements bénéficiaires à faire face à une partie des coûts supplémentaires d’exploitation et de maintenance découlant de leurs nouvelles infrastructures.
Ce nouvel investissement permet d’offrir aux chercheurs travaillant au Canada les outils nécessaires pour mener à bien des projets couvrant un très large éventail de domaines de recherche novatrice :
- Utilisation de nouveaux instruments météorologiques pour recueillir des données permettant aux producteurs d’énergie d’améliorer le rendement des parcs d’éoliennes. (Université de Moncton, Moncton, N.B.)
- Développement de nouveaux agents magnétiques de contraste pour la recherche utilisant l’imagerie par résonance magnétique, et favorisant le recours à la nanotechnologie. (Université Laval, QC)
- Approfondissement de l’expérience dans l’utilisation des jeux numériques et des environnements immersifs à des fins éducatives. (Université McMaster, Hamilton, ON)
- Amélioration de la qualité de vie des aînés grâce à de nouvelles approches thérapeutiques visant le diabète de type 2. (Université de l’Alberta, Edmonton, AB)
- Élaboration de nouvelles approches thérapeutiques pour la détection et le traitement efficaces des maladies telles que le cancer. (Université de la Colombie-Britannique, Vancouver, C.-B.)
