Le gouvernement du Canada annonce un important investissement dans l’infrastructure de recherche

| OTTAWA, le 18 juin 2009 − La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) et l’honorable Tony Clement, ministre de l’Industrie, ont annoncé aujourd’hui un investissement de plus de 665 M$ dans l’infrastructure de pointe de 41 établissements de recherche canadiens. |  |

Le financement de 133 projets au moyen du Fonds de l’avant-garde et du Fonds des initiatives nouvelles de la FCI permettra aux plus brillants chercheurs de notre pays de mener des activités de recherche de pointe à l’aide d’équipements et d’installations de calibre mondial.
Cet investissement dans le milieu canadien de la recherche contribuera à la relance de l’économie par l’embauche des travailleurs qui construiront les laboratoires et les équipements nécessaires pour mener des travaux de recherche de pointe, de même que des techniciens et des scientifiques qui les feront fonctionner de manière efficace.
« Par l’intermédiaire de la FCI, notre gouvernement met en place des installations de pointe afin de recruter des chercheurs de calibre mondial », a déclaré le ministre Tony Clement. « Nous sommes convaincus que cet investissement contribuera de manière importante à la stimulation de l’économie à court terme, tout en faisant une différence à long terme dans la vie des Canadiens. »
Le Dr Eliot Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI, s’est joint au ministre Clement à l’occasion de cette annonce, à l’Université d’Ottawa.
« En investissant dans l’infrastructure de recherche de pointe, nous nous assurons que notre pays continuera de prospérer parmi les nations axées sur l’innovation », a déclaré le Dr Phillipson. « Ce nouvel investissement rehaussera grandement la capacité du Canada à mener d’importants projets de recherche et de développement technologique de calibre mondial au profit de ses citoyens. »
L’investissement de la FCI débouchera sur de nouvelles découvertes et occasionnera le développement de nouvelles technologies, ce qui permettra au Canada de demeurer compétitif sur les marchés internationaux. Les sommes attribuées par le passé ont mené à des percées dans de nombreux domaines, y compris la recherche sur la moelle épinière, les technologies associées aux bâtiments verts, l’informatique quantique et les changements climatiques.
L’investissement annoncé aujourd’hui a été approuvé par le conseil d’administration de la FCI, par suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation au mérite mené par des experts.
Une somme de 247 664 977 $ a été attribuée pour financer 64 projets au titre du Fonds de l’avant-garde, dont l’objectif est de permettre aux établissements de recherche de tirer profit des projets de recherche reconnus pour leurs succès et leur productivité et ayant fait l’objet d’une contribution financière de la FCI par le passé. Un montant de 264 741 466 $ a aussi été attribué pour financer 69 projets au titre du Fonds des initiatives nouvelles, un programme visant à améliorer la capacité d’innovation du Canada dans de nouveaux champs prometteurs de recherche et de développement technologique.
La FCI a attribué 153 721 933 $ additionnels à même le Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme qui aide les établissements bénéficiaires à faire face aux coûts d’exploitation et de maintenance découlant de leurs nouvelles infrastructures.
