La FCI investit 39 millions de dollars pour donner au Canada un avantage concurrentiel au chapitre du savoir

MONTRÉAL, le 8 juin 2007— La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) vient de donner un nouvel élan au milieu canadien de la recherche. Le président-directeur général de la Fondation, le Dr Eliot Phillipson, accompagné de l’honorable Michael M Fortier, ministre des Travaux publics et des Services gouvernementaux et ministre responsable de la région de Montréal, au nom de l’honorable Maxime Bernier, ministre de l’Industrie et ministre responsable de la FCI, a annoncé aujourd’hui à l’Université de Montréal un investissement de 39 millions de dollars pour financer des infrastructures de pointe dans 42 universités et collèges de recherche aux quatre coins du Canada. Les infrastructures acquises permettront à 261 des meilleurs chercheurs au pays de mener à bien leurs travaux de recherche.
Les 207 projets tributaires de l’investissement annoncé aujourd’hui couvrent tout l’éventail de la recherche effectuée au Canada. Cette injection de fonds permettra de soutenir la recherche dans des secteurs d’importance stratégique pour le Canada tels que la santé, les technologies de l’information, les ressources naturelles, la nanotechnologie et l’environnement.
« Les sociétés et les économies du XXIe siècle seront caractérisées par une recherche innovatrice et une main-d’œuvre très instruite et qualifiée, a déclaré le Dr Phillipson. Au cours des dix dernières années, les investissements de la FCI ont constitué l’un des principaux facteurs qui ont permis aux universités et collèges du Canada de recruter quelques-uns des meilleurs chercheurs au monde. L’investissement annoncé aujourd’hui permettra de continuer sur cette lancée. »
« Le nouveau gouvernement du Canada est déterminé à créer un climat d’excellence en recherche, comme en témoigne notre récente stratégie des sciences et de la technologie qui vise à accroître la compétitivité du Canada et à améliorer notre qualité de vie, a déclaré le ministre Fortier. Dans le cadre du budget de 2007, nous sommes heureux de verser 510 millions de dollars à la FCI afin qu’elle mène avant 2010 un autre important concours de subventions pour l'infrastructure de recherche. »
L’investissement de 39 156 118 $ a été approuvé par le conseil d’administration de la FCI à la suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation au mérite :
- Un montant de 32 630 098 $ a été attribué au titre du Fonds des leaders, un programme continu conçu pour aider les universités canadiennes à recruter et à maintenir en poste au Canada les meilleurs chercheurs d’aujourd’hui et de demain.
- Les 6 526 020 $ restants ont été attribués au titre du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme connexe qui aide les universités à faire face aux coûts d’exploitation et de maintenance découlant des nouvelles infrastructures.
La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) est un organisme autonome créé par le gouvernement du Canada pour financer l’infrastructure de recherche. Son mandat est d’accroître la capacité des universités, des collèges, des hôpitaux et des établissements de recherche canadiens à but non lucratif de poursuivre des activités de recherche et de développement technologique d’envergure internationale qui produisent des retombées pour les Canadiens. Depuis sa création en 1997, la FCI a engagé 3,73 milliards de dollars servant à appuyer plus de 5 100 projets menés par 129 établissements de recherche dans 64 municipalités partout au Canada.
