La FCI lance un nouveau programme pour attirer et retenir les meilleurs

MONTRÉAL, le 27 mars 2006 – L’annonce aujourd’hui des premiers bénéficiaires du Fonds des leaders de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) vient consolider la réputation du Canada comme destination de choix des meilleurs chercheurs au monde. Le Dr Eliot Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI, a annoncé aujourd’hui en compagnie de l’honorable Maxime Bernier, ministre de l’Industrie, un investissement de 23,6 millions de dollars à l’intention de 145 chercheurs œuvrant dans 35 établissements au pays.
Quelques exemples des 130 projets faisant l’objet de l’annonce d’aujourd’hui : la lutte à la contamination environnementale par des résidus de métaux toxiques; le développement de médicaments visant à guérir les maladies infectieuses et inflammatoires chez les jeunes; la compréhension du développement socioaffectif des adolescents; l’amélioration de la performance des microsystèmes utilisés par l’industrie automobile et par les secteurs de la médecine et des télécommunications.
La FCI est fière d’inaugurer aujourd’hui son Fonds des leaders. Ce nouveau fonds a été créé pour tenir compte de l’évolution rapide du milieu canadien de la recherche. Il apportera aux universités canadiennes la flexibilité dont elles ont besoin pour recruter et maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs d’aujourd’hui et de demain, à une époque où la concurrence internationale est vive pour les établissements qui désirent demeurer à l’avant garde.
« Le gouvernement reconnaît que les universités canadiennes font figure de chefs de file dans la recherche de calibre international. L’annonce d’aujourd’hui montre hors de tout doute que nous désirons rester bien présent dans la course », a affirmé le ministre Bernier. « Cet investissement ne profitera pas uniquement aux universités et aux chercheurs canadiens. En fait, tous les Canadiens pourront bénéficier des retombées des avancées scientifiques et technologiques produites par nos chercheurs. »
« Les investissements que nous avons faits au cours de la dernière décennie dans des laboratoires, des équipements et des technologies à la fine pointe ont transformé le portrait de la recherche au Canada », a déclaré le Dr Phillipson. « Grâce à notre nouveau programme, le Fonds des leaders, nous nous assurerons que ce processus de transformation se poursuive, faisant en sorte que les établissements de recherche canadiens et les chercheurs qui y travaillent continuent de faire l’envie des autres pays du monde. »
L’investissement de 23,6 millions de dollars annoncé aujourd’hui a été approuvé par le conseil d’administration de la FCI au titre de deux fonds, soit 19,7 millions de dollars au titre du Fonds des leaders et 3,9 millions de dollars au titre du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme complémentaire qui aide les universités à faire face aux coûts supplémentaires d’exploitation et d’entretien rattachés aux nouveaux projets d’infrastructure.
