La FCI investit près de 30 M$ pour accroître la capacité de recherche de toutes les régions du Canada

FREDERICTON, le 26 avril 2004 — Les établissements de recherche de toutes les régions du pays ont reçu un grand coup de main qui les aidera à recruter et à conserver 164 excellents chercheurs. La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) a annoncé aujourd’hui son appui à 145 projets de 33 universités qui permettront à de nouveaux chercheurs talentueux de poursuivre leurs recherches dans des installations de classe internationale. |

M. Andy Savoy, député pour la circonscription de Tobique-Mactaquac, au nom de l’honorable Lucienne Robillard, ministre de l’Industrie et ministre responsable de l'Agence de développement économique du Canada pour les régions du Québec, s’est joint à Carmen Charette, présidente-directrice générale par intérim de la FCI, à Fredericton, pour annoncer un investissement de 29,9 M$ en vertu du Fonds de relève de la FCI.
Selon Mme Charette, « cet investissement stratégique aidera nos universités à recruter et à conserver certains des chercheurs les plus brillants et les meilleurs du monde. Les établissements de toutes les régions du pays sont enchantés du nouveau climat d’optimisme et d’enthousiasme qui se manifeste, sachant que les chercheurs auront accès à l’équipement et aux installations dont ils auront besoin pour entreprendre de la recherche de premier plan et former la prochaine génération de chercheurs canadiens. »
Le Fonds de relève de la FCI permet aux universités admissibles de mettre des infrastructures de recherche à la disposition des nouveaux membres de leur corps professoral occupant leur premier poste à temps plein dans une université canadienne. Ils peuvent ainsi entreprendre des recherches de pointe. Il permet aussi à ces établissements de recruter de nouveaux membres de leur corps professoral dans des domaines de recherche qui constituent des priorités de leurs plans stratégiques de recherche.
Selon la ministre Robillard, « les chercheurs du Canada ont apporté des contributions exceptionnelles au développement de l’innovation au Canada. La réussite du programme du Fonds de relève de la FCI contribue à l’amélioration du rendement en recherche du Canada et cet investissement vise à favoriser la formation en recherche des jeunes Canadiens et à nous assurer que le Canada sera au nombre des pays les plus innovateurs du monde. »
Selon le M. Savoy, « grâce au Fonds de relève de la FCI, Ies jeunes chercheurs pourront continuer à travailler ici au pays. A travers le Canada, les chercheurs continuent d’effectuer des travaux à la fine pointe afin de réaliser des découvertes et des innovations qui auront des retombées positives sur différents aspects de la vie des Canadiennes et des Canadiens. Leurs travaux permettent le Canada de maintenir sa position de chef de file en matière de recherche et de développement. »
Le conseil d’administration de la FCI a approuvé un investissement total de 29,9 M$ dans de l’infrastructure appuyant 145 projets de 33 établissements canadiens. En voici des exemples :
- University of New Brunswick - Hydrodynamic Infrastructure for Marine Ecology Research;
- Nipissing University - Nipissing University Aquatic Ecotoxicology Laboratory;
- Université de Montréal - Analyse multiparamétrique du comportement physiologique des cellules cardiaques ;
- University of British Columbia – UBC Feeding Behaviour and Feed Intake Monitoring System for Cattle.
Les nouveaux projets ont été approuvés compte tenu des recommandations d’experts qui les ont évalués soigneusement en fonction des trois critères de la FCI :
- Qualité de la recherche et besoin de l’infrastructure
- Contribution à l’amélioration de la capacité d'innovation
- Retombées potentielles de la recherche pour le Canada
La FCI a effectué ces investissements de 29,9 M$ en vertu de deux fonds soit 23 M$ dans le cadre du Fonds de relève et 6,9 M$ dans le cadre du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures qui aide les universités à défrayer les coûts d’exploitation et d’entretien associés aux nouveaux projets d’infrastructure.
