La FCI annonce un financement important pour la recherche canadienne

OTTAWA, le 8 mars 2004 — La collectivité de la recherche au Canada recevra un important coup de main grâce à un investissement de 585,9 M$ de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI). Cet investissement contribuera à appuyer une infrastructure de recherche de pointe dans des domaines qui présentent une importance stratégique pour le Canada comme la santé, les nanotechnologies, les collectivités durables et la nouvelle économie fondée sur le savoir. |

Le premier ministre Paul Martin, avec l’honorable Lucienne Robillard, ministre de l’Industrie, et M. David Strangway, président-directeur général de la FCI, ont annoncé du soutien à 126 projets d’infrastructure dans 57 universités, collèges, hôpitaux de recherche et autres établissements à but non lucratif du Canada. L’honorable Joe Fontana, Secrétaire parlementaire du Premier ministre particulièrement chargé des sciences et des petites entreprises s’est joint à eux pour cette annonce.
« Notre économie doit s’appuyer, entre autres sur l’ingéniosité et la créativité sur le plan individuel. Ceci nécessite un système d’éducation hors pair et un engagement envers l’excellence et l’innovation » a déclaré le premier ministre. « Par suite de l’annonce faite aujourd’hui, la FCI a porté la capacité de recherche de notre pays à un niveau supérieur et a continué de favoriser l’innovation, la recherche et le développement au Canada. »

« Notre appui à une infrastructure de recherche de pointe est en train de transformer le milieu de la recherche et de rehausser notre compétitivité sur le plan international », a souligné David Strangway. « Grâce à la FCI, les établissements sont en mesure de former des partenariats avec leur province, leurs gouvernements municipaux, le secteur privé et le secteur bénévole, ce qui permettra au Canada de demeurer un leader mondial en matière d’innovation. »
« L'investissement de la FCI permettra à nos établissements de recherche de tirer parti des excellentes possibilités qu'offre notre capital intellectuel sur les plans régional, national et international, a déclaré la ministre Robillard. Ces infrastructures ouvriront des débouchés, alimenteront le développement de pôles industriels et permettront la commercialisation du fruit de nos travaux de recherche. »
Cet investissement de 585,9 M$ a été accordé en vertu de deux fonds : 450,7 M$ en vertu du Fonds d’innovation qui permet aux établissements d’améliorer leur infrastructure de recherche dans toutes les disciplines y compris les sciences sociales et humaines; et 135,2 M$ en vertu du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures qui aide les universités à défrayer les coûts additionnels d’exploitation et d’entretien des nouveaux projets d’infrastructure. Neuf des 126 projets du Fonds d’innovation annoncés aujourd’hui sont nationaux ainsi que des projets régionaux et des partenariats entre plusieurs établissements.
De plus, après s’être penché sur les aperçus de projets, le conseil d’administration de la FCI invite les hôpitaux à soumettre 19 demandes complètes à la FCI d’ici le 31 mai 2004 en vertu du Fonds des hôpitaux de recherche (FHR). Ces projets, associés à des projets subventionnés au Fonds d’innovation, visent à rehausser la capacité des hôpitaux, sur le plan régional et national, de faire de la recherche dans le domaine de la santé qui sera concurrentielle sur le plan international. En effet, le Fonds des hôpitaux de recherche est conçu pour appuyer des projets d’infrastructure de grande envergure qui appuient des recherches pouvant mener à une amélioration de la santé des Canadiens et à des services et des produits de santé plus efficaces.
Les investissements de plus de 2,5 G$ que la FCI a consentis dans l’infrastructure de recherche depuis sept ans ont eu des effets importants sur la recherche faite dans notre pays en contribuant à créer un milieu favorable pour les activités de transfert du savoir, en rehaussant notre productivité en recherche, en facilitant le recrutement et la rétention d’excellents chercheurs et en formant du personnel très qualifié. Les recherches rendues possibles par cette infrastructure mènent aussi à des bénéfices pour le Canada et à une amélioration de notre qualité de vie.
La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) est un organisme autonome créé par le gouvernement du Canada en 1997 pour financer l’infrastructure de recherche. Son mandat est d’accroître la capacité des universités, des collèges, des hôpitaux et d’autres établissements canadiens sans but lucratif de poursuivre des activités de recherche et de développement technologique d’envergure internationale qui produiront des bénéfices pour les Canadiens.
