« La FCI est un élément clef de la stratégie du gouvernement du Canada visant à faire de notre pays l’une des nations les plus innovatrices du monde d’ici l’an 2010, de dire le ministre Rock. Les projets choisis ont fait l’objet d’une évaluation indépendante très rigoureuse. Ils joueront un rôle important en vue d’accroître le bien-être des Canadiens et de rehausser la réputation du Canada en tant qu’excellent endroit où investir et vivre. »
« Ces nouveaux investissements marquent une étape historique dans notre effort visant à donner un appui à des recherches d’une excellence sans égale et à faire progresser le Canada sur la voie de l’innovation », a déclaré M. Strangway. « Ils donneront un appui extraordinaire aux établissements de recherche et à leurs chercheurs en vue de les aider à devenir des chefs de file dans le cadre de l’économie mondiale fondée sur le savoir. »
La FCI a maintenant investi plus de 1,55 milliard de dollars depuis le mois d’août 1998 dans l’infrastructure de recherche des universités et des établissements de recherche au Canada. Compte tenu de la contribution des autres partenaires financiers, ceci s’est traduit par près de 3,9 milliards de dollars en investissements visant à améliorer le milieu de la recherche au Canada.
Les projets annoncés aujourd’hui ont été approuvés par le Conseil d’administration de la FCI compte tenu des recommandations de comités multidisciplinaires d’experts de classe mondiale provenant d’une vaste gamme de domaines et de disciplines. Pour recevoir un appui financier, les candidats devaient faire la preuve de l’excellence et de l’aspect novateur de leurs projets et montrer comment ils apporteraient des bénéfices pour le Canada.
Les projets choisis par la FCI appuieront de la recherche dans le domaine de la santé, du génie, des sciences, de l’environnement ainsi que des sciences sociales et humaines. Grâce à eux, des milliers de chercheurs de toutes les provinces auront accès à de nouvelles installations de recherche de pointe.
La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation est un organisme autonome à but non lucratif que le gouvernement du Canada a créé en 1997 pour répondre au besoin pressant de la communauté de recherche du Canada en matière de nouvelles infrastructures de recherche d’avant-garde. La FCI défraie 40 pour cent du coût admissible des projets. Le reste provient des établissements de recherche et de leurs partenaires financiers du secteur public, du secteur privé et du secteur bénévole.
La FCI s’est vu confier un budget d’investissement de 3,15 milliards de dollars.
