Un investissement de 45 M$ en infrastructure de recherche attire des chercheurs de calibre mondial

| OTTAWA, le 12 décembre 2008 — Le Canada enrichit sa base de connaissances en recrutant et en maintenant en poste les travailleurs qui soutiennent les activités novatrices et la croissance. Aujourd’hui, nous sommes heureux d’annoncer que 312 chercheurs pourront mener des travaux de recherche de pointe grâce à un investissement de 45 M $ du Fonds des leaders, un programme de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI). Ce programme de financement a été créé afin de permettre l’acquisition d’infrastructures favorisant le recrutement de chercheurs par les établissements canadiens dans un contexte où la concurrence est très vive en ce qui a trait au recrutement du personnel scientifique. |

Cet investissement dans des laboratoires et des équipements de pointe de 44 universités aux quatre coins du Canada permettra de mener 251 projets dans des domaines clés comme l’environnement, les ressources naturelles et l’énergie, la santé, de même que les technologies de l’information et des communications.
« Le gouvernement du Canada est conscient que les progrès scientifiques et technologiques sont essentiels pour accroître la capacité concurrentielle de l’économie canadienne.», a déclaré l’honorable Tony Clement, ministre de l'Industrie et ministre responsable de la FCI. « L’annonce d’aujourd’hui vient confirmer l’engagement de notre gouvernement à soutenir les chercheurs et les innovateurs canadiens dans l'élaboration d'idées nouvelles en investissant dans une infrastructure permettant de mener des activités de recherche de calibre mondial. »
«Notre gouvernement donne suite à son engagement de préserver notre prospérité future », a déclaré l’honorable Gary Goodyear, ministre d’État des Sciences et de la Technologie. «Ces projets permettront de créer de l’emploi, d’améliorer la qualité de vie des familles canadiennes et de renforcer l’économie pour les générations à venir. »
« Au cours de la dernière décennie, les investissements dans des laboratoires, des équipements et des technologies de pointe ont transformé le paysage canadien de la recherche », a affirmé le Dr Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI. « La Fondation suit de près cette transformation afin de s’assurer que les établissements canadiens et les chercheurs qu’ils emploient demeurent de calibre international. »
Par suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation au mérite, le conseil d’administration de la FCI approuvé un investissement total de 45 454 854 $. Ce montant se répartit comme suit :
- 38 234 190 $ sont attribués par le Fonds des leaders.
- 7 220 664 $ sont alloués à même le Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme connexe qui aide les établissements bénéficiaires à faire face aux coûts additionnels d’exploitation et de maintenance découlant de leurs nouvelles infrastructures.
Le Fonds des leaders (FL) de la FCI a été mis sur pied en guise de réponse à l’évolution rapide du milieu canadien de la recherche. Il donne aux universités canadiennes la souplesse dont elles ont besoin pour recruter et maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs du monde à une époque où la concurrence internationale ayant trait au recrutement des travailleurs du savoir est très vive.
Parmi les activités couvertes par la présente annonce, on retrouve :
- le développement de nouvelles technologies visant à produire du carburant propre;
- l’amélioration des technologies de l’information et des communications;
- élaborer de nouvelles pratiques et de nouveaux processus visant l’exploitation responsable des ressources naturelles;
- l’amélioration des soins liés à la toxicomanie et à l’obésité.

La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) est un organisme autonome créé par le gouvernement du Canada pour financer l’infrastructure de recherche.
