KINGSTON, le 16 décembre 2009 — Aujourd’hui, l’honorable Gary Goodyear, ministre d’État (Sciences et Technologie) et la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), ont annoncé des investissements totalisant 59 M$ dans l’infrastructure de 262 projets qui seront réalisés par 40 établissements de recherche canadiens. Ces investissements permettront à des chercheurs talentueux de mener des activités de recherche de pointe dans des installations de calibre international. Attribués au titre du Fonds des leaders (FL), ces investissements permettront à 351 des plus brillants cerveaux du pays de tenir leurs activités de recherche.

« Notre gouvernement investit dans la science et la technologie afin de stimuler la création d’emplois, d’améliorer la qualité de vie des Canadiens et de renforcer l’économie, à déclaré le ministre Goodyear. Cet investissement permettra aux universités et autres établissements de recherche canadiens de former, de recruter et de maintenir en poste les plus brillants chercheurs au monde. »
« Pour mener des activités de recherche au XXIe siècle, il est essentiel de miser sur des équipements et des installations de pointe », a déclaré le Dr Eliot Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI. « Depuis plus d’une décennie, la FCI a fourni à des milliers de chercheurs de calibre mondial les outils dont ils ont besoin pour mener à bien leurs travaux. S’ils ne pouvaient disposer d’une infrastructure de pointe, ces chercheurs travailleraient tout simplement ailleurs qu’au Canada. »
Ces investissements visent l’infrastructure de recherche de pointe qui aide à stimuler divers secteurs de l’économie associés à de tels projets d’immobilisation. On estime que chaque dollar investi directement dans la recherche produit des retombées économiques de plus de sept dollars et contribue à la création d’emplois.
Le Fonds des leaders (FL) de la FCI a été mis sur pied en guise de réponse à l’évolution rapide du milieu canadien de la recherche. Il donne aux universités canadiennes la souplesse dont elles ont besoin pour recruter et maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs du monde à une époque où la concurrence internationale ayant trait au recrutement des travailleurs du savoir est très vive.
Le conseil d’administration de la FCI a approuvé un investissement total de 59 394 902 $ par suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation au mérite des propositions reçues. Ce montant comprend 45 688 386 $ attribués au titre du Fonds des leaders, et 13 706 516 $ provenant du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme complémentaire qui aide les établissements bénéficiaires à faire face à une partie des coûts d’exploitation et de maintenance des infrastructures financées par la FCI.
Ces investissements permettent d’offrir aux chercheurs travaillant au Canada les outils nécessaires pour mener à bien des projets couvrant un très large éventail de domaines de recherche novatrice, tels que :
