La FCI verse 6,5 millions de dollars pour lancer la carrière de nouveaux chercheurs dans les universités canadiennes
Ottawa, le 20 octobre 2000… M. David Strangway, président-directeur général de la Fondation canadienne pour l'innovation (FCI), a annoncé aujourd'hui un investissement de 6,5 millions de dollars pour fournir des installations de recherche de calibre international à 52 nouveaux chercheurs des universités canadiennes.
«L'investissement de la FCI est capital pour aider nos universités à attirer et à conserver les meilleurs chercheurs du Canada, a déclaré M. Strangway. Ces nouveaux chercheurs auront accès aux appareils et aux installations nécessaires pour mettre leur créativité à profit et contribuer ainsi à renforcer le leadership mondial du Canada en recherche.»
Dans le cadre du Fonds de relève, le conseil d'administration de la FCI a approuvé un investissement de 6,5 millions de dollars pour appuyer 41 projets dans 17 universités, notamment :
- Une installation de traitement des matériaux composites à l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique.
- Un appareil d'imagerie de résonance magnétique à l'Université de l'Alberta pour l'évaluation des accidents cérébrovasculaires et d'autres maladies neurologiques.
- Une installation de recherche intégrée sur le comportement et la neurologie à l'Université Queen's.
- Une installation pour étudier le contrôle cellulaire et moléculaire de la connexité des circuits cérébraux à l'Université Laval.
- Une infrastructure de recherche à l'Université Dalhousie pour étudier les mécanismes moléculaires de la chorée de Huntington.
Les projets ont été choisis en se basant sur les recommandations d'experts qui ont évalué en profondeur chaque projet en tenant compte des trois critères de la FCI :
- La qualité de la recherche et le besoin d'une infrastructure.
- La contribution au renforcement de la capacité d'innovation.
- Les avantages potentiels de recherche pour le Canada.
La FCI couvre 40 % des coûts admissibles d'un projet. L'autre tranche de 60 % provient des universités et de leurs partenaires de financement des secteurs public et privé. Depuis août 1998, la FCI a investi un total de 78,1 millions de dollars dans le cadre du Fonds de relève. À ce jour, la FCI, les universités et leurs partenaires ont investi ensemble plus de 195,3 millions de dollars pour appuyer 766 nouveaux chercheurs dans 36 universités dans le cadre du Fonds de relève.
La FCI est une société autonome à but non lucratif créée par le gouvernement fédéral en 1997 pour combler un besoin urgent du milieu de recherche canadien : des infrastructures de recherche à la fine pointe. La FCI s'est vue confier un budget d'investissement de 2,4 milliard de dollars. Elle investit en partenariat avec tous les niveaux de gouvernement ainsi qu'avec les secteurs privé et bénévole.
