Les investissements du gouvernement du Canada dans la recherche soutiennent l’innovation et la prospérité dans les collectivités canadiennes
Halifax (Nouvelle-Écosse), le 5 juin 2013 – L’honorable Gary Goodyear, ministre d’État (Sciences et Technologie), a annoncé aujourd’hui un investissement important dans l’équipement, les laboratoires et les outils de pointe de recherche qui aideront les établissements d’enseignement postsecondaires canadiens à attirer les chercheurs de talent et à bâtir une économie nationale toujours plus innovante.
« Notre gouvernement investit dans l’infrastructure de recherche pour fournir des installations de calibre mondial aux meilleurs chercheurs des universités canadiennes, a affirmé le ministre d’État Goodyear. Les Canadiens profitent de ces investissements qui entraînent la croissance de grappes industrielles, le lancement d’entreprises dérivées novatrices et la création d’emplois de haut calibre dans l’industrie du savoir, qui est en plein essor. »
Cet investissement de 47,7 millions de dollars du gouvernement fédéral par l’entremise du Fonds des leaders de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) appuiera 234 projets de recherche en santé, en agriculture et en éducation partout au pays.
L’annonce a eu lieu à l’occasion de la cérémonie d’inauguration du Ocean Sciences Building à la Dalhousie University. Le gouvernement du Canada investit plus de 2,4 millions de dollars dans l’infrastructure et l’exploitation de 12 initiatives de recherches menées à cette université. Ce montant comprend près de 800 000 dollars pour la création du Ocean Sciences building.
« Grâce au financement de la FCI, nos dynamiques chercheurs ont accès à l’équipement et aux laboratoires nécessaires pour repousser les frontières de la science, explique Gilles G. Patry, président-directeur général de la FCI. Les installations de pointe permettent d’attirer les meilleurs chercheurs au monde et constituent un milieu de formation essentiel pour la nouvelle génération d’innovateurs canadiens. »
Le Ocean Sciences building hébergera désormais le Oceans Tracking Network, le Marine Environment Observation Prediction and Response Centre (MEOPAR), un réseau de centres d’excellence, et un laboratoire spatial qui sera utilisé par Douglas Wallace, titulaire de la Chaire d’excellence en recherche du Canada sur la science et la technologie des océans de la Dalhousie University.
Voici quelques-uns des projets retenus au dernier cycle de financement de la FCI :
- Des chercheurs de la Dalhousie University travaillent à la création d’un laboratoire d’analyse des gaz à effet de serre de calibre mondial unique en son genre qui fournira des outils importants pour la gestion des sols et la réduction des émissions dans le secteur agricole.
- Des chercheurs de la University of British Columbia tentent de trouver des outils pour aider les familles dont un enfant éprouve de la difficulté à entrer en relation avec ses pairs.
- Des chercheurs de la University of Saskatchewan tentent de mieux comprendre les effets des changements climatiques sur les ressources en eau afin de formuler des lignes directrices et des politiques pour une exploitation plus efficace de ces ressources.
- Des chercheurs de la Wilfrid Laurier University étudient la composition fondamentale des virus afin de mettre au point de meilleurs médicaments antiviraux pour les humains et d’importantes industries canadiennes comme l’aquaculture.

La FCI a octroyé 36,7 millions de dollars par l’entremise de son Fonds des leaders qui aide les universités à attirer et à maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs, et 11 millions de dollars au moyen de son Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures qui offre du financement d’exploitation et de maintenance aux infrastructures qu’elle finance.
Le Plan d’action économique de 2013 prévoit mettre à disposition un montant de 225 millions de dollars en revenu d’intérêts non attribué de la FCI afin de financer l’infrastructure de recherche de pointe.
Depuis 2006, le gouvernement du Canada a consacré plus de 9 milliards de dollars en nouveau financement à des initiatives de soutien aux sciences, à la technologie et à la croissance des entreprises novatrices. Le Plan d’action économique de 2013 renforce cette solide assise en mettant en place les conditions qui permettront au Canada de jouir d'une prospérité économique durable à long terme, et d'offrir à sa population une meilleure qualité de vie.
