OTTAWA, le 21 octobre 2004 – Plus que jamais, les outils et les techniques de recherche de pointe ouvrent de nouveaux horizons. Les établissements se font concurrence pour attirer et garder des chercheurs, qui orientent à leur tour les priorités de recherche du Canada.
Le président-directeur général de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), M. Eliot Phillipson, a annoncé aujourd’hui en compagnie de l’honorable Peter Adams, Secrétaire parlementaire du ministre des Ressources humaines et du Développement des compétences, au nom du ministre de l’Industrie, l’honorable David Emerson, que le conseil d’administration de la FCI avait approuvé un budget de 23,7 millions de dollars à l’appui de 135 projets auxquels participeront 160 chercheurs répartis dans 32 établissements d’un bout à l’autre du pays. Sur cette somme, 18,2 millions ont été alloués par le biais du Fonds de relève, qui soutient l’acquisition de l’infrastructure nécessaire pour les professeurs nouvellement recrutés, tandis que 5,5 millions seront versés afin d’aider les universités à assumer les coûts additionnels de fonctionnement et d’entretien liés aux nouveaux projets.
Les investissements annoncés aujourd’hui sont destinés à des recherches de pointe de toutes sortes, depuis la mise au point d’une nouvelle génération d’ordinateurs de bureau allant au-delà du paradigme clavier/souris, en Nouvelle-Écosse, jusqu’à des recherches spécialisées sur les utilisations novatrices de l’aluminium, au Québec. Dans le nord de l’Ontario, de nouveaux professeurs examineront les moyens de garder les médecins fraîchement diplômés dans les communautés rurales, tandis que l’équipement acquis au Manitoba permettra de pousser plus loin la recherche et les activités de collaboration sur les conséquences du réchauffement planétaire pour l’écosystème arctique.
« La capacité d’innovation d’un pays repose en bonne partie sur la présence de spécialistes hautement qualifiés. Comme la recherche est le fondement de l’innovation, il est essentiel que les établissements canadiens réussissent à attirer et à garder les chercheurs les plus doués, a souligné M. Phillipson. Le Fonds de relève continue à jouer un rôle crucial pour les aider à développer et à améliorer leur potentiel de recherche, de formation et de transfert du savoir. » Depuis sa création en 1997, la FCI a investi plus de 262 millions de dollars dans le cadre du Fonds de relève et fourni de l’équipement de pointe à 2 497 professeurs nouvellement recrutés, dont plus de 40 p. 100 venaient de l’étranger.
