MONTRÉAL, le 3 juillet 2007 — La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) vient d’annoncer un investissement de 26 millions de dollars pour aider les universités canadiennes à recruter et à maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs canadiens et de l’étranger. Cet investissement permettra de financer l’infrastructure de 136 projets menés dans 40 universités, permettant ainsi à 192 chercheurs chevronnés de mener des travaux de recherche à l’aide d’installations de calibre mondial.
Le Dr Eliot Phillipson, président-directeur général de la FCI, accompagné de l’honorable Maxime Bernier, ministre de l’Industrie et ministre responsable de la FCI, a procédé aujourd’hui à cette annonce à l’Université McGill. Les projets faisant l’objet d’un financement joueront un rôle important dans la création d’un avantage du savoir par le Canada, en renforçant sa capacité de recherche dans des domaines de priorités stratégiques pour le pays.
« Comme en témoigne notre stratégie des sciences et de la technologie récemment annoncée, le nouveau gouvernement du Canada s’engage à créer l’environnement nécessaire pour améliorer la réputation internationale du Canada au chapitre de l’excellence en recherche, et à augmenter le bassin d’expertise scientifique, a déclaré le ministre Bernier. L’annonce faite aujourd’hui est un exemple de l’engagement de notre gouvernement envers la recherche-développement et à l’endroit des chercheurs qui transforment les idées et les innovations en applications commerciales et pratiques dont profitent tous les Canadiens. »
« Des investissements de ce genre ont fait du Canada un lieu très attirant pour les personnes hautement qualifiées sur lesquelles repose la prospérité future du Canada, a pour sa part déclaré le Dr Phillipson. Ce financement donnera la chance à de brillants jeunes chercheurs de transformer leurs idées en innovations qui permettront de résoudre des problèmes importants, notamment en matière de santé et d’environnement, en plus d’améliorer notre compétitivité économique. »
Le conseil d’administration de la FCI a donné son aval à un investissement total de 26 368 253 $ par suite d’un rigoureux processus d’évaluation fondé sur le mérite.
Le financement annoncé aujourd’hui permettra d’investir dans des projets liés aux secteurs des sciences de l’environnement, des ressources naturelles et de l’énergie, de la santé et des sciences de la vie, de même que des technologies de l’information et des communications.
La Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) est un organisme autonome créé par le gouvernement du Canada pour financer l’infrastructure de recherche. Son mandat est d’accroître la capacité des universités, des collèges, des hôpitaux et des établissements de recherche canadiens à but non lucratif de poursuivre des activités de recherche et de développement technologique d’envergure internationale qui produisent des retombées pour les Canadiens. Depuis sa création en 1997, la FCI a engagé 3,76 milliards de dollars pour financer plus de 5 300 projets menés par 129 établissements de recherche dans 64 municipalités aux quatre coins du Canada.
