La FCI contribue à garder des chercheurs d’élite au Canada
OTTAWA, 29 juin 2004 – Grâce aux investissements de la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), les établissements de recherche sont en mesure d’attirer et de garder des éléments de l’élite scientifique mondiale. Voilà 10 ans à peine, le Canada n’était pourtant pas un pôle d’attraction pour les chercheurs et subissait même un grave exode des cerveaux.
Aujourd’hui, la présidente-directrice générale par intérim, Mme Carmen Charette, a annoncé que le conseil d’administration de la FCI avait approuvé 124 projets de recherche auxquels participent 140 chercheurs répartis dans 40 établissements d’un bout à l’autre du pays. D’un total de 23,8 M$, ces investissements se font par le biais du Fonds de relève (18,3 M$), qui soutient l’acquisition d’infrastructures pour les membres du corps professoral nouvellement recrutés, et par le biais du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures (5,5 M$), qui contribue aux coûts additionnels d’exploitation et d’entretien liés aux nouveaux projets.
« Nous pouvons affirmer que le Canada devient un pays de prédilection pour les chercheurs de calibre mondial, a déclaré Mme Charette. Ces investissements vont asseoir encore davantage sa réputation d’excellence dans les recherches de pointe et la formation des chercheurs. » Depuis sa création en 1997, la FCI a investi plus de 225 M$ via son Fonds de relève et fourni de l’équipement de pointe à 2080 nouveaux membres du corps professoral.
Les investissements annoncés aujourd’hui sont destinés à des recherches de pointe de toutes sortes. En Alberta, des scientifiques s’attaquent à de graves problèmes comme l’hépatite C, le virus du Nil occidental, le virus de Norwalk et le SRAS. D’autres à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador visent à faire du Canada un chef de file en mettant au point une formule de lait améliorée pour traiter les bébés prématurés souffrant de troubles gastro-intestinaux. En Colombie-Britannique, des chercheurs auront désormais les outils nécessaires pour mieux étudier les causes et les effets de troubles d’apprentissage tels que le déficit de la capacité d’attention. D’autres en Ontario aborderont par de nouvelles techniques l’étude des stéréotypes et des préjugés entretenus envers les minorités et contribueront à éclairer le débat et les décisions dans ce domaine.
