La FCI contribue à faire du Canada une destination de choix pour les chercheurs d’envergure internationale

EDMONTON, le 21 juin 2006 — Le monde de la recherche au Canada poursuit sa remarquable transformation, comme en témoigne l’annonce faite aujourd’hui par la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI) au sujet du financement accordé à 33 universités canadiennes pour la mise en œuvre de 103 projets innovateurs. Le docteur Eliot Phillipson, président directeur général de la FCI, a annoncé aujourd’hui que le Fonds des leaders de la FCI investira 20,5 millions de dollars dans les travaux de recherche de 132 des plus brillants chercheurs canadiens.
Voici quelques exemples des nombreux projets financés par la FCI : la mise au point de techniques novatrices pour améliorer l’approvisionnement en eau souterraine sur la planète; la recherche de nouvelles façons d’exploiter l’énergie éolienne; l’étude des répercussions des nouveaux contaminants organiques sur la santé humaine et l’environnement; et l’exploration de façons inédites de composer de la musique au moyen de la technologie informatique.
« L’investissement annoncé aujourd’hui démontre que le Canada entend demeurer une destination prisée par les chercheurs étrangers, a déclaré le docteur Phillipson. En leur fournissant les moyens d’accéder aux installations et aux équipements ultramodernes dont ils ont besoin pour poursuivre des recherches de calibre mondial, nous faisons ce qu’il faut pour que cette heureuse tendance se maintienne. »
Le Fonds des leaders de la FCI est un nouveau programme conçu pour s’adapter à l’évolution rapide du milieu de la recherche au Canada en donnant aux universités canadiennes les moyens nécessaires pour recruter et maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs, malgré la vive concurrence à laquelle se livrent les établissements d’enseignement sur la scène mondiale pour s’approprier des chercheurs de calibre international. Le récent budget fédéral de 2006 prévoit que le Fonds des leaders recevra 20 millions de dollars d’argent neuf chaque année.
« La recherche scientifique et le développement technologique sont essentiels pour accroître la productivité et le niveau de vie », a déclaré l’honorable Maxime Bernier, ministre de l’Industrie. « Cet investissement donnera un nouveau souffle à la formation des jeunes chercheurs canadiens. Il permettra au Canada de demeurer concurrentiel dans l’économie mondiale du savoir, et ultimement, d’améliorer la qualité de vie des Canadiens et des autres citoyens du monde.»
Le conseil d’administration de la FCI a approuvé cet investissement au titre de deux fonds, soit 17 millions de dollars du Fonds des leaders et 3,5 millions de dollars du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, un programme connexe qui aide les universités à acquitter les frais d’exploitation et de maintenance qui découlent des nouveaux projets d’infrastructure.
L’annonce d’aujourd’hui inclut un projet de recherche financé conjointement par la FCI et le Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG). Ce projet concerne les travaux de recherche de Jacob Masliyah de l’Université d’Alberta, qui s’est également vu attribuer une chaire de recherche industrielle par le CRSNG. Il s’agit du premier projet dont le financement est approuvé suivant un nouveau mécanisme en vertu duquel la FCI procédera à une évaluation conjointe des projets avec les trois autres organismes canadiens de financement de la recherche. Cette façon de faire permet de rationaliser et de simplifier le processus de demande de financement pour les établissements et leurs chercheurs.
« Cette nouvelle initiative passionnante est un excellent exemple de la façon dont les organismes subventionnaires canadiens peuvent travailler ensemble de manière efficace afin de financer différents aspects d’un programme de recherche avec un minimum de bureaucratie », a déclaré M. Nigel Lloyd, vice-président directeur du CRSNG à propos de ce nouveau mécanisme. « En outre, je suis très heureuse que le CRSNG continue à appuyer les travaux de M. Masliyah, qui est un chef de file reconnu dans le domaine de l’extraction du bitume et l’un des chercheurs en génie chimique les plus prolifiques au monde. »
