La FCI attirent des chercheurs de calibre mondial au Canada

WINNIPEG, le 7 novembre 2005 – D’un bout à l’autre du pays, des universités reçoivent de nouveaux fonds qui leur permettront d’attirer et de garder dans leurs effectifs 115 chercheurs d’élite. Selon l’annonce faite aujourd’hui par la Fondation canadienne pour l’innovation (FCI), 87 projets seront financés dans 31 universités, qui pourront ainsi mettre des installations de pointe à la disposition de nouveaux chercheurs de premier plan.
Le président-directeur général de la FCI, le Dr Eliot Phillipson, a en effet annoncé une nouvelle injection de fonds de 18,6 millions de dollars, accompagné de Reg Alcock, président du Conseil du Trésor et ministre responsable de la Commission canadienne du blé, au nom de l’honorable David L. Emerson, ministre de l’Industrie. L’annonce d’aujourd’hui marque la fin du Fonds de relève de la FCI, qui a permis d’attirer au Canada plus de 3 000 chercheurs depuis sa création en 1998.
« Grâce aux investissements qu’elle a faits depuis sa création, la FCI a transformé le paysage de la recherche scientifique dans notre pays », a déclaré pour sa part le ministre Alcock. « Notre gouvernement est fier de ces engagements qui rendront notre économie plus innovatrice et compétitive, tout en rehaussant la qualité de vie de tous les Canadiens. »
« Le Fonds de relève a contribué à faire du Canada une destination de choix pour l’élite scientifique du monde entier », a déclaré le Dr Phillipson. « En dotant nos universités des équipements les plus perfectionnés, nous nous assurons que notre pays demeure concurrentiel dans l’économie mondiale du savoir. »
Le Conseil d’administration de la FCI a approuvé un financement total de 18,6 millions de dollars au titre de deux fonds : 14,3 millions de dollars proviennent du Fonds de relève et 4,3 millions de dollars, du Fonds d’exploitation des infrastructures, qui contribue aux coûts additionnels d’exploitation et d’entretien découlant de nouveaux projets.
Les investissements approuvés fourniront aux chercheurs au pays les outils dont ils ont besoin pour mener à bien des recherches de toutes sortes, par exemple :
- au Québec - rétablir l’activité cérébrale et la motricité après un ACV;
- en Nouvelle-Écosse - utiliser des « toits verts » pour améliorer la biodiversité urbaine et favoriser la régénération des écosystèmes;
- en Alberta - assurer la viabilité de l’industrie laitière grâce à une meilleure nutrition animale;
- en Ontario - créer un laboratoire portatif pour étudier l’attention humaine dans le monde réel.
Tel que mentionné ci-dessus, l’annonce d’aujourd’hui marque la fin du Fonds de relève de la FCI. Ce fonds est remplacé par le Fonds des leaders, qui mettra à profit les réussites du Fonds de relève, du Fonds d’infrastructure des chaires de recherche du Canada et du Fonds des bourses de carrière. Le nouveau programme est conçu pour aider les universités canadiennes à recruter des professeurs de haut niveau et à maintenir en poste les meilleurs chercheurs d’aujourd’hui et de demain. Il est doté d’un budget de plus de 300 millions de dollars qui sera alloué entre 2006 et 2010 pour des projets de recherche choisis avec la plus grande rigueur.
