Government of Canada investment in cutting-edge research to spur growth and innovation
April 23, 2010
| OTTAWA, Ontario— The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, was joined today by Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), to announce $27.87 million in support of 118 projects in 32 Canadian research institutions. This investment, made under the CFI’s Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF), will benefit the work of 156 of the country’s brightest minds. |

“In the global economy, knowledge, research and innovation drive economic growth and enhance social well-being. Canada’s long-term economic competitiveness depends now, more than ever, on innovation,” said Minister Clement. “That is why as a government, we are committed to creating the right environment to improve Canada’s international reputation for research excellence.”

These investments provide researchers across Canada with the tools necessary to carry out a range of innovative research, including:
- improving predictions of atmospheric aerosol concentrations to help Canada make better informed decisions regarding human health, climate change and economic stability;
- employing novel technologies to improve the assessment of heart valve functioning in people suffering from heart disease;
- enhancing research into Alzheimer’s disease and dementia by identifying methods and treatments for minimizing the impact of strokes on patients;
- increasing the knowledge of stem cell biology and tissue regeneration to contribute to the quality of life of patients suffering from degenerative disease or infertility; and
- using cutting-edge infrastructure to examine how soil microbes can be used to boost the productivity of marginal lands for biofuels.
“The CFI is proud to support the innovative researchers of this nation to tackle today’s pressing research challenges,” said Dr. Phillipson. “By investing in their work, we are ensuring that Canada remains competitive in the global knowledge economy.”
The LOF supports Canada’s quickly evolving research environment by giving Canadian universities the flexibility they need to attract and retain the world’s finest researchers at a time of intense international competition.
The CFI’s Board of Directors approved a total investment of $27,871,219 following a rigorous merit-review process. This amount included $21,439,399 awarded under the LOF and another $6,431,820 awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, a complementary program designed to contribute to the incremental operating and maintenance costs of infrastructure projects funded by the CFI.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed $5.3 billion in support of almost 6,700 projects at 130 research institutions in 65 municipalities across Canada.
| CFI practices have been called "world's best" by a panel of international experts, based on a recent third-party performance evaluation and value-for-money audit. For the complete evaluation, audit and panel report, visit our website here. |
