CFI invests $22.5 Million for World-Class Research
March 26, 2008
|
OTTAWA, March 26, 2008 — Canada continues to strengthen its knowledge base by attracting and retaining the workers that drive innovation and growth in the global knowledge economy. Today, 157 researchers will be able to conduct cutting-edge research thanks to a $22.5 million investment announced by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The investment in state-of-the-art labs and equipment at 31universities across the country will jump-start 134 projects in key areas of research ranging from the environment to health, information and communication technologies. |
|
Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the CFI, was joined this morning at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, by Mr. James Rajotte, MP Edmonton-Leduc, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the CFI, to announce new funding under the CFI’s Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF). This funding program was designed to provide infrastructure intended to attract researchers to Canadian institutions at a time of intense international competition for knowledge workers.
“Guided by our Science and Technology Strategy announced by Prime Minister Harper last May and reinforced in Budget 2008, the Government of Canada is committed to strengthening Canada’s knowledge base in S&T,” said MP Rajotte. “Today’s announcement confirms our government’s commitment to creating the right environment to help improve Canada’s international reputation for research excellence.”
“Access to modern, cutting-edge equipment and facilities is imperative to research in the 21st century,” said Dr. Phillipson. “Over the past decade, the CFI has provided thousands of world-class researchers with the tools they need to do their work. Without the infrastructure, they quite simply wouldn’t be in Canada.”
The CFI’s Board of Directors approved a total investment of $22,492,679 following a rigorous merit review process. Of this:
- $18,743,899 was awarded under the Leaders Opportunity Fund;
- the remaining $3,748,780 million was awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, an accompanying program designed to contribute to the incremental operating and maintenance costs of infrastructure projects funded by the CFI.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed $3.8 billion in support of 5,714 projects at 128 research institutions in 64 municipalities across Canada.
