CFI Invests $39 Million to Create a Knowledge Advantage for Canada

MONTREAL, June 8, 2007—Canada’s research community got another major boost from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) today. CFI President and CEO Dr. Eliot Phillipson was joined at the Université de Montréal by the Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister responsible for the Montreal Region, on behalf of the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the CFI, to announce an investment of $39 million for new cutting-edge research infrastructure at 42 universities and colleges across the country. This new infrastructure will enable the work of 261 of Canada’s best and brightest researchers.
The 207 projects supported by today’s investment span the entire spectrum of research in Canada. The funding will bolster research in areas of strategic importance to the country, including health, information technology, natural resources, nanotechnologies, and the environment.
“Knowledge-intensive economies and societies of the 21st century will be characterized by innovative research, and a highly educated and skilled workforce,” said Dr. Phillipson. “Over the past 10 years, the CFI’s investments have been a major factor in enabling Canada’s universities and colleges to attract some of the world’s best researchers. This important investment will ensure that this trend continues.”
“Canada’s New Government is committed to a climate of research excellence as demonstrated in our recently launched science and technology strategy to improve Canada’s competitiveness and enhance our quality of life,” said Minister Fortier. “We are pleased to be providing the CFI with $510 million through Budget 2007 to undertake another major research infrastructure competition before 2010.”
The $39,156,118 investment was approved by the CFI’s Board of Directors following a rigorous merit review process:
- $32,630,098 was awarded under the Leaders Opportunity Fund, an ongoing program designed to assist universities in attracting excellent faculty to Canadian institutions, as well as retaining the very best of today and tomorrow’s leading researchers for Canada.
- The remaining $6,526,020 was awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, an accompanying program that assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed $3.73 billion in support of more than 5,100 projects at 129 research institutions in 64 municipalities across Canada.
