CFI Welcomes Additional Funding Allocated in Federal Budget 2007

OTTAWA, June 25, 2007 – The 2007 Federal Budget includes an allocation of $510 million to the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), new money that will allow the CFI to undertake another major competition before 2010.

Conducting world-class research and providing training at the cutting edge depends on access to state-of-the-art equipment. (…) The CFI ensures that its investments support excellence by allocating funding through international peer-reviewed competitions and investing jointly with other stakeholders. Budget 2007 provides $510 million to the CFI to enable it to undertake another major competition before 2010.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed $3.74 billion in support of more than 5,200 projects at 129 research institutions in 64 municipalities across Canada.
