$25.5 Million CFI Investment Boosts Canada’s Brain Gain

Ottawa, June 29, 2005—Today’s announcement by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) of 132 projects at 39 universities will enable Canadian institutions across the country to attract and retain 181 high-caliber researchers as a result of this new funding.
Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the CFI, was joined by David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry Canada to announce a new investment of $25.5 million for Canadian universities.
The CFI Board of Directors approved a total investment of $25.5 million through two funds: $19.6 million under theNew Opportunities Fund (NOF); and $5.9 million under the Infrastructure Operating Fund which assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.
“The funding for these projects will keep Canada at the forefront of research,” said David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry. “The government recognizes the value of research that not only boosts our economy, but improves the quality of life for Canadians.”
“The New Opportunities Fund has been essential in keeping exceptional researchers in Canada and attracting the very best from around the world,” said Dr. Eliot Phillipson. “As a result of this continued support, Canada has rapidly become a destination of choice for leading-edge researchers.”
The CFI’s NOF enables eligible universities to provide research infrastructure for newly recruited faculty members in their first full-time academic appointment, so that these researchers can undertake leading-edge research that benefits Canadians. The fund also enables institutions to recruit new faculty members in the areas of research identified as priorities in their strategic research plans.
These investments cover a wide spectrum of cutting-edge research. Examples include: a Virtual Reality Laboratory for the Prevention and Rehabilitation of Mobility Disorders in Quebec, the Investigation of Soil Slope Instability Processes in Ontario, Computer Music Research and Composition Studios in Alberta, and Modeling Head and Eye Movements During Locomotion and Balance Recovery in New Brunswick.
