$23.8 Million CFI Investment Boosts Research Capacity Across Canada

VICTORIA, March 11, 2005—Canadian institutions across the country have received a significant boost that will help them attract and retain 154 high-caliber researchers. The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) today announced support for 120 projects in 41 universities which will allow new and talented researchers to conduct their research in world-class facilities.

Carmen Charette, Senior Vice-President of the CFI was joined by the Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry, in Victoria today to announce a new investment of $23.8 million to Canadian universities. “Canada’s researchers have made outstanding contributions to the development of innovation in this country,” said Minister Emerson.
“The success of the CFI’s New Opportunities Fund is helping to improve Canada’s research performance. The investments announced today will continue to ensure Canada’s place among the most innovative countries in the world.”
The CFI’s New Opportunities Fund (NOF) enables eligible universities to provide research infrastructure for newly recruited faculty members, so that these researchers can undertake leading-edge research that benefits Canadians. The fund also enables institutions to recruit new faculty members in the areas of research identified as priorities in their strategic research plans.
“This is an investment in Canada’s future,” says Carmen Charette. ”We are providing the tools that will attract tomorrow’s leaders and create opportunities for them to work with the very best.”
The CFI Board of Directors approved a total investment of $23.8 million through two funds: $18.3 million under theNew Opportunities Fund; and $5.5 million under the Infrastructure Operating Fund which assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects. These investments cover a wide spectrum of cutting-edge research. Examples include: the impact of childhood obesity on cardiovascular health in Ontario; agricultural pollution treatment in Quebec; the study of bioactive compounds in blueberry, cranberry, and marine algae in Prince Edward Island; a fluids control laboratory in Saskatchewan for use in electronics and healthcare applications; and underwater vehicle technology development in British Columbia.
