Canada Foundation for Innovation Invests $26 Million to Attract and Retain the Best and Brightest Minds and Fuel World-Class Research

MONTRÉAL, July 3, 2007 — The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) announced a $26-million investment to help universities across the country attract and retain the best and brightest minds from Canada and around the world. The funds will provide infrastructure support for 136 projects at 40 universities, enabling 192 high-calibre investigators to conduct their research in world-class facilities.
Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the CFI, was joined today at McGill University by the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the CFI, to make the announcement. The projects funded will play an important role in creating a knowledge advantage for Canada by strengthening research capacity in areas of strategic priority to the country. Included in today’s investment is funding for projects in the fields of environmental science, natural resources and energy, health and related life sciences, and information and communication technologies.
“Canada’s New Government is committed to creating the right environment to improve Canada’s international reputation for research excellence, and to building a larger base of scientific expertise, as demonstrated in our recently launched Science and Technology Strategy,” said Minister Bernier. “Today’s announcement is an example of our government’s commitment to research and development and to those researchers who turn ideas and innovations into practical and commercial applications for the benefit of all Canadians.”
“Investments like these have allowed Canada to become a magnet for the highly skilled people on whom our country’s future prosperity depends,” said Dr. Phillipson. “This funding will allow bright young researchers to turn their ideas into innovations that provide solutions to environmental, health, and other important challenges, in addition to improving our economic competitiveness.”
The $26,368,253 investment was approved by the CFI’s Board of Directors following a rigorous merit review process:
- $21,973,544 was awarded under the Leaders Opportunity Fund, an ongoing program designed to assist Canadian universities in attracting and retaining outstanding faculty members and researchers.
- The remaining $4,394,709 was awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, an accompanying program that contributes to the incremental operating and maintenance costs of infrastructure projects funded by the CFI.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed $3.76 billion in support of more than 5,300 projects at 129 research institutions in 64 municipalities across Canada.
