Creating a Knowledge Advantage for Canada
$28 Million Investment for 193 Researchers in Canada
|
OTTAWA, November 15, 2007 — Canada has come a long way when it comes to attracting and retaining the knowledge workers that drive innovation and growth in the global knowledge economy. Today, the country took another step forward: 193 researchers – 50 of which were recruited from outside Canada – will be able to conduct cutting edge research thanks to a $28 million investment announced by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). The investment in state-of-the-art labs and equipment at 35 universities and colleges across the country will jump-start 139 projects in key areas of research ranging from environmental science to health, information and communication technologies, to the social sciences and humanities. |
|
The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), joined Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the CFI, this morning in Ottawa to announce the new funding under the CFI’s Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF), a program designed to provide infrastructure to attract researchers to Canadian institutions at a time of intense international competition for knowledge workers.
“Imperative to research in the 21st century is access to modern, cutting-edge equipment and facilities,” said Dr. Phillipson. “Over the past decade, the CFI has provided thousands of world-class researchers with the tools they need to do their work. Without the infrastructure, they quite simply wouldn’t be in Canada.”
”As demonstrated in Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada’s Advantage, our government is committed to building a larger base of scientific expertise and to creating the right environment to improve Canada’s international reputation for research excellence,“ said Minister Prentice. ”We recognize the importance of doing more to help commercialize scientific and technological innovations. This in turn will help create better jobs, increase economic growth and improve our quality of life.”
Today’s $27,904,254 investment was approved by the CFI’s Board of Directors following a rigorous merit review process. Of these:
- $23,344,067 was awarded under the Leaders Opportunity Fund;
-
The remaining $4,560,187 was awarded under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, an accompanying program that assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.
A complete list of the projects funded to date and a list of the approved funding for this announcement are available here.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians. Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has committed $3.78 billion in support of more than 5,500 projects at 128 research institutions in 64 municipalities across Canada.
