CFI Invests in Award-Winning Researchers
OTTAWA, November 26, 2003—Today, Dr. David Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), announced an investment of $966,309 under the CFI’s Career Awards. This infrastructure investment by the CFI will be provided to five Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Steacie Fellows.
“These awards recognize the achievements and exceptional contributions of accomplished individuals,” said Dr. Strangway. “The CFI is proud to work in partnership with NSERC on these important initiatives.”
For the second year in a row the CFI, in partnership with the federal granting councils, is supporting outstanding researchers by providing institutions with the infrastructure that is essential to carry out their research.
Under the Career Awards, the CFI Board of Directors approved an investment of $966,309 in infrastructure for the following researchers:
- Michel Gingras (University of Waterloo), Computing Serial Cluster for Theoretical Research on Quantum Materials, ($150,347 CFI contribution).
- Zonchao Jia (Queen’s University), X-ray Detector and Fermenter for Protein Crystallography Research, (CFI contribution: $200,000).
- Victoria Kaspi (McGill University), Pulsar Searches with the Arecibo L-Band Feed Array (CFI contribution: $182,300).
- Molly Shoichet (University of Toronto), Engineering Neural Tissue (CFI contribution: $319,191).
- Gary Saunders (University of New Brunswick), Developing Novel Gene Systems to Test Molecular Phylogenetic Hypotheses for Red Algae (CFI contribution: $114,471).
