EDMONTON, June 21, 2006—Canada’s research landscape continued its remarkable transformation today when Dr. Eliot Phillipson, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), announced funding for 103 innovative new projects at 33 Canadian universities. This investment of $20.5 million under the CFI’s Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) will support the work of 132 of Canada’s brightest researchers.
Examples of the wide-ranging projects approved for funding today include: innovative strategies for improving the world’s groundwater supplies; new technologies for harnessing wind power; the effects of emerging organic contaminants on human health and the environment; and computer-aided music composition.
“Today’s investments represent another important step in ensuring that researchers from around the world continue to see Canada as a destination of choice,” said Dr. Phillipson. “Providing them with access to the cutting-edge equipment and facilities necessary to conduct world-class research will make sure that this exciting trend continues.”
The CFI’s Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) is a new program designed to reflect Canada’s fast-evolving research environment by giving Canadian universities the flexibility they need to both attract and retain the world’s finest researchers at a time of intense international competition for leading faculty. The recent 2006 Federal Budgetannounced that the LOF program will receive an additional $20 million per year.
“Scientific research and technological development are essential for higher productivity, and a rising standard of living,” said the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry. “The investments announced today will help stimulate research training of young Canadians, ensure Canada’s competitiveness in the global knowledge-based economy, and ultimately improve quality of life in Canada and around the world.”
The $20.5 million investment was approved by the CFI’s Board of Directors under two funds: $17 million under the LOF, and $3.5 under the Infrastructure Operating Fund, an accompanying program which assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.
Today’s announcement includes a project jointly funded by the CFI and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to support the work of Jacob Masliyah at the University of Alberta, the recipient also of an Industrial Research Chair position awarded by NSERC. This is the first project approved under a new mechanism that will see the CFI review projects jointly with Canada’s three federal funding agencies, a process that will streamline and simplify the funding application procedure for both researchers and institutions.
“This exciting new initiative is a great example of how Canada’s various funding agencies can work together effectively to fund different aspects of a research program with a minimum of bureaucracy,” said Dr. Nigel Lloyd, Executive Vice-President at NSERC about this new mechanism. “As well, I am very pleased that NSERC can continue to support the work of Dr. Masliyah, who is a recognized leader in the field of bitumen extraction and one of the most prolific chemical engineering researchers in the world.”
A complete list of the projects funded to date and a list of the approved funding for this announcement are available here.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI’s mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.
