CFI Helps to Keep Great Research Minds in Canada

OTTAWA, June 29, 2004—Thanks to the infrastructure investments made by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), institutions are able to attract and retain the world’s best researchers when just a decade ago, Canada was not seen as an attractive place for research and was faced with a major brain drain challenge.
Today, Carmen Charette, Interim President and CEO of the CFI, announced that the CFI Board of Directors approved $23.8 million to support 124 projects involving 140 researchers at 40 research institutions across Canada. These investments have been awarded through two funds: $18.3 million under the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) for infrastructure support to newly recruited academic staff; and $5.5 million under the Infrastructure Operating Fund (IOF) which assists universities with the incremental operating and maintenance costs associated with new infrastructure projects.
“We can say with conviction that Canada is becoming a place where world-class researchers want to be," said Carmen Charette, Interim President and CEO of the CFI. “This CFI investment will further develop Canada's global reputation as a place where outstanding research and training is being conducted.” Since its creation in 1997, the CFI has invested more than $225 million through its New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and provided 2080 newly recruited faculty members with state-of-the-art equipment.
The investments announced today cover a wide spectrum of cutting-edge research. In Alberta, researchers are tackling issues such as hepatitis C, West Nile Virus, Norwalk Virus, and SARS. Researchers in Newfoundland and Labrador will help make Canada a world leader in the development of an improved baby formula to treat premature babies with gastro-intestinal diseases. Researchers in British Columbia will now have access to the tools they need to further study the cause and effects of learning disabilities such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). And using new techniques to research stereotyping and prejudice behaviors towards minority groups, Ontario researchers will help stimulate meaningful debate amongst decision makers.
