Draft Call for Proposals

The CFI has announced a considerable amount of investments over the last 6 months. With no major competition under way, this is an opportune moment to take stock and to reflect on future directions. This CFI Update has a dual purpose: to provide our stakeholders with a status report as well as to give you a flavor of the questions we are pondering as we reflect on the future of our major funds.  Ottawa, July 4, 2002 – Today, Allan Rock, Minister of Industry joined the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s Dr. David Strangway, in the CFI’s announcement of an investment totalling $30M at 39 universities across Canada. These funds will provide world-class research infrastructure support to newly recruited faculty members.

Ottawa, June 20, 2002… Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, today joined Dr. David W. Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), to announce the names of nine large-scale research infrastructure projects aimed at promoting Canada’s position in the areas of marine and environmental sciences, infectious diseases, astronomy, light sources, and particle physics.

OTTAWA, June 14, 2002 - Industry Minister Allan Rock today announced the appointment of Dr. Alan Bernstein to the Board of Directors of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). Dr. Bernstein who is President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) was appointed for a two-year term.

Originally, the CFI had planned to announce the details on the next Innovation Fund competition in the Spring of 2002. Given the significant investment for this most recent competition, the CFI Board of Directors has decided to delay this announcement until the Fall of 2002 at the earliest. This will give time for the implementation of approved projects, for consultation and planning the next round in light of experience gained from the 2001 competition, and for the design of high quality projects.

Strangway, President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation, today announced the launch of a new Internet-based magazine dedicated to Canadian research. Entitled Innovation Canada, the new e-zine features stories about some of the most cutting-edge research that is taking place in universities and research institutions across the country.
